HHS Office and Location: A fellowship opportunity is currently available in the Office of the Surgeon General’s (OSG) Division of Science and Policy within the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Health (OASH) to support Public Health Reports, the Office’s peer-review public health journal. This appointment is located in Washington, D.C.
The mission of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is to enhance the health and well-being of all Americans, by providing for effective health and human services and by fostering sound, sustained advances in the sciences underlying medicine, public health, and social services.
Research Project: Public Health Reports (PHR) is the official journal of the Office of the Surgeon General and the US Public Health Service, published since 1878. PHR is published bimonthly in collaboration with the Association of Schools and Programs in Public Health (ASPPH). The journal publishes research and viewpoints in public health research, practice, methodology, law and education. The journal’s contributors are from the front lines of public health and their work is presented in a readable and accessible format.
OSG is responsible for communicating the best possible science to the public on a wide variety of health issues, including mental and physical health, infectious and chronic disease, special population health, addictions, and much more. PHR is a high- quality component of OSG that communicates scholarly research to public health practitioners and policymakers.
Learning Objectives: Under the guidance of a mentor, opportunities may include:
Learning from PHR Editors with regular or supplemental issue production. Learning about planning the Surgeon General’s and Executive Perspectives articles. Learning about PHR’s peer-review acquisition and follow-up for submitted manuscripts. Learning about developing social media and other health communications for PHR. Learning about the development of strategic planning to engage local, state and federal health agencies and ASPPH members in high quality submissions for PHR. Anticipated Appointment Start Date: February 1, 2025. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year but may be renewed upon recommendation of HHS and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full time.
Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience and receive a stipend for healthcare benefits.
Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens only.
ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and HHS. Participants do not become employees of HHS, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
