Position Description: Located in the largest jurisdiction in the National Capitol Region, the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) is a progressive public health leader serving 1.2 million residents from diverse ethnic, cultural, and economic backgrounds. As part of the Division of Epidemiology and Population Health, this full-time entry level position will provide support for efforts directed toward monitoring population health and well-being and understanding the behavioral, structural, economic, social, and cultural factors impacting health status, disparities, and inequities across communities. Work under this position will primarily focus on issues around mental health and substance use. Additionally, this position will contribute to ongoing organizational performance monitoring, evaluation, and quality improvement activities through various data collection, management, analysis, and reporting efforts in collaboration with other FCHD staff.

Under general supervision, key responsibilities for this position include:

Descriptive and inferential analyses monitoring county-level population trends, patterns, and disparities in health conditions, with a focus on substance use and mental health conditions, and underlying health determinants utilizing local, state, and national data sources; Development (e.g., data extraction, cleaning, coding, and matching) of analytic datasets for assessing and monitoring population characteristics, health determinants, and health outcomes; Data collection, management, and analytic support for surveillance, epidemiologic, and program evaluation activities; Development and maintenance of internal and external data visualization dashboards; Routine monitoring and reporting on key population health indicators; Investigation and reporting on notifiable population health events (e.g., neonatal abstinence syndrome) to the Virginia Department of Health Completion of systematic literature reviews on key issues related to the prevention, screening, treatment, and care of adverse health conditions and general promotion of physical and mental well-being; Development of infographics, reports, publications, and presentations translating analytic findings for diverse audiences with varying levels of epidemiologic and public health expertise; Data, analytic, and informational support for organizational and community committees and working groups; and other duties as assigned. Employment Standards MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Master's degree in public health (MPH) or a master of science (MS) with graduate work in epidemiology and/or biostatistics.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

Possession of a valid motor vehicle driver's license CPR - Required within 60 days AED - Required within 60 days

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a child protective services, a sanction screening and driving records check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of public health principles and practices. Experience in the analysis of health disparities and issues related to health equity. Experience in the analysis of substance use and mental health outcomes and knowledge of behavioral health prevention, intervention and health promotion strategies. Ability to work independently. Must be results driven, detail-oriented, and demonstrate effective and customer-oriented communication skills.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Job is generally sedentary in nature, however, job entails walking, sitting, standing, climbing stairs, reaching, and bending; uses hands to grasp, handle, or feel. Visual acuity is required to read data on computer monitor; ability to operate keyboard driven equipment. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk, see, and hear. Ability to drive a vehicle. Employee may be required to carry or lift up to 25 lbs. The incumbent must be able to communicate with others verbally and in writing. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
