Position Description: An opportunity is available in the Division of Viral Hepatitis, National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention, at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

The participant will gain experience in the Epidemiology and Surveillance Branch as a part of the surveillance team. The mission of the ESB Branch is to: 1) monitor and evaluate rates and risk factors associated with acute and chronic infections with hepatitis viruses, viral hepatitis and liver disease through surveillance systems and special studies, including surveillance; (2) conduct research, including outbreak investigations, clinical trials, cohort studies and population-based demonstration projects, to determine the epidemiology of transmission of known and new hepatitis viruses and their variants, the natural history of infections with hepatitis viruses, evaluate the performance of diagnostic tests for hepatitis virus infections, and evaluate methods and approaches for the prevention and control of hepatitis virus infections; (3) estimate disease burden attributable to infections with hepatitis viruses and the effectiveness of programs to prevent these infections; (4) provide consultation to state, local, national, and international authorities for the prevention and control of viral hepatitis, the investigation of disease outbreaks, and surveillance of hepatitis and liver disease; (5) disseminate information through scientific publications and presentations; and (6) provide training opportunities for Epidemic Intelligence Service Officers and others in CDC sponsored programs, postgraduate students, post- doctoral fellows and other public health scientists.

Activities for the participant may include : •Research projects related to surveillance, epidemiology and prevention of viral hepatitis. •Research methodologies designed to promote the scientific and programmatic foundations and leadership for the prevention and control of hepatitis virus infections and their manifestations. •Research methods to promote healthy personal behaviors for the prevention and control of hepatitis virus infections. •Written research reports summarizing relevant communications and policies pertaining to the epidemiologic factors and identifying risk factors for viral hepatitis infection in different settings. •Oral research communications summarizing relevant technical information pertaining to the epidemiologic and/or risk factors pertaining to viral hepatitis infection in different settings.

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment- related benefits.

Qualifications: •Doctoral degree in epidemiology received within past five years preferred; master's degree in epidemiology or biostatistics received within past five years will be considered.
