Position Description: Serving as a Chronic Disease Epidemiologist/Program Evaluator in the Division of Population Health (DPH) the job duties will include analyzing chronic disease data, conducting surveillance for and developing data products on chronic disease programs, establishing evaluation plans and reports and using data analysis tools (e.g., Statistical Analysis Software, Geographic Information System, Tableau, RedCap) to support federally funded grant programs. With supervisor’s guidance, and wokring closely with team members, operationalize data collection tools and instruments to report on chronic disease indicators and performance measures. Represent VDH on regular grantee and technical assistance calls (e.g., monthly calls with federal funding agency, Epidemiology and Evaluation Consortium). With supervisor’s guidance, contribute to grant applications and reports by providing disease burden information, statistics (e.g., rates, percentages, frequencies, statistical testing) on heart disease, stroke, diabetes/ prediabetes, hospital claims data, and self-reported health behavioral data (e.g., BRFSS, YRBS). Respond to data requests in a timely manner by providing high quality, reproducible data reports. Work with a team of DPH program epidemiologists/evaluators, Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (DPHP) staff and external stakeholders to plan, initiate, and execute epidemiology/evaluation studies for grant funded programs. This position will participate on regular monthly calls with federal funding agencies (e.g., Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), monthly and periodic team meetings, occasional partner and sub-receipient site visits, and attend annual grantee meetings as needed. Work with supervisor to develop and conduct program surveys using RedCap and/or Survey Gizmo which collect quantitative data to inform programmatic needs. There will also be a need to work closely with the internal Surveys and Analysis Team to ensure that chronic disease data captured is reflective of grant reporting requirements.

Qualifications: A Bachelor’s degree in a health related field, or a combination of education and experience is required. An intermediate level of SAS data analysis skill with the ability to write program code. Knowledge of the CDC’s Six Step Framework for Program Evaluation. Experience with Microsoft Excel and database management (e.g., MS Access). Knowledge of evaluation techniques with the ability to research, compile, and analyze data. Must have basic to intermediate level competency with MS Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, etc. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in written language, and work well with others. Occasional travel may be required.

Organization Description: This position will support chronic disease programs within the Office of Family Health Services, through the provision of epidemiology and evaluation support. The Virginia Department of Health, is a State Health Department, located in Richmond Virginia.
