Position Description: Under the general direction of the Bureau Chief of Epidemiology and Disease Control, the position of the Medical Director will serve as the Chief Medical Officer for the Bureau of Epidemiology and Disease Control as well as the State Deputy Tuberculosis Control Officer. In these capacities, the position will provide consultation, evaluation and expertise to the Bureau, local health departments and health care providers on medical aspects of public health issues primarily involving infectious disease. The Medical Director will be responsible for administration and direction of tuberculosis control activities in Arizona in consultation with the Tuberculosis Control Officer. The individual in this role will prepare proposals and manuals pertaining to medical aspects of legislation, rules, policies, standards of care and budgets. This position also assists in the education of healthcare providers on public health issues such as immunizations, emerging pathogens, antibiotic resistance, healthcare associated infections, bioterrorism, disease-specific policies, environmental health, medical marijuana and prompt case reporting.

The Medical Director will provide assistance in preparation of press releases and reporting on medical media issues, along with reviewing medical aspects of Health Consultation Program reports to ensure medical accuracy. The individual in this role will coordinate collaboration with universities for lectures and adjunct professorships, and make or approve decisions that are required as State Deputy Tuberculosis Control Officer. The Medical Director will strategize and collaborate with the Divisional Medical Director. The Medical Director makes or approves decisions pertaining to medical and public health aspects of communicable disease control, including consulting with other Bureau physicians, along with consulting on medical aspects relating to medical doctors within the Bureau. This role also coordinates intra-bureau collaboration on immunizations, infectious diseases, toxicity exposures, lead poisoning, and other medical issues.

Qualifications: -Arizona medical board licensed for the State of Arizona -Medical, epidemiologic and scientific skills to: consult with physicians, decision/policymakers and general public; design and conduct scientific studies and investigations required to identify disease agents, health conditions, and health risk factors; and plan interventions and communicate them to others ?Analytic skills to interpret medical, epidemiologic and other health related data to identify program needs, and establish appropriate program goals and objectives ?Interpersonal skills including public speaking and media interaction ?These skills can only be obtained through formal science and medical training which include premedical education; medical school, and post-graduate residency programs, clinical practice experiences and continuing medical education programs ?At least 2-3 years of clinical practice experience involving direct patient care, medical license in Arizona, and 1 or more years of experience in public health are also preferred
