Position Description: A project is available in the Laboratory Branch, Viral Hepatitis Division, within the National Center for HIV, Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

The fellow will have the opportunity to design and optimize assays for the detection, characterization, and quantitation of viral hepatitis markers, particularly to distinguish acute from chronic Hepatitis C. The accurate detection of of recent infections would greatly improve HC HCV outbreak analysis and surveillance.

Specific training may include:

•Experimental design: the design of protocols for the characterization of Hepatitis A-E.

•Sample processing: the weekly high-throughput laboratory processing of Viral Hepatitis samples.

•Cloning and cell and tissue culture systems to characterize viral hepatitis A-E.

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-re related related benefits.

Qualifications: •BS, MSc, or PhD in Molecular Biology or related field, earned within the past five ye years is required.

•Ability to understand and follow experimental protocols and plan experiments of of varying complexity is preferred.

•Experience with techniques such as RT-PCR, Real-time PCR, cell and tissue culture, cl cloning, and sequencing is preferred.
