IHRC, Inc. provides scientific, information management, management consulting, bioinformatics, and administrative program support to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other Federal and private sector clients.  The successful candidate will be a full-time employee of IHRC, Inc., and will be assigned to the Meningitis and Vaccine Preventable Diseases Branch (MVPDB), Division of Bacterial Diseases (DBD), National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD) at the CDC, 1600 Clifton Road, Atlanta, GA, to provide scientific and technical support for the MVPDB.

SCOPE OF WORK

The Microbiologist will provide support for microbiological and molecular testing to identify and characterize vaccine preventable disease (VPD) pathogens, procurement of laboratory supplies, reagents and equipment, implementation of a quality assurance program, and other MVPDB initiatives.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform standard bacteriological and molecular tests and procedures, and complete records of all test results for diagnostic, surveillance, experimental and reference samples in the MVPDB Meningitis Laboratory.
  • Provide scientific and technical support for the exploration, development and implementation of sequencing based typing methods (Sanger Sequencing and Whole Genome Sequencing) to improve the Meningitis Laboratory bioinformatics.
  • Lead and participate in public health and scientific projects and studies to advance knowledge in meningitis surveillance and outbreak.
  • Prepare, maintain and organize biological materials such as bacterial culture stocks, clinical specimens, and bacterial DNA; be aware of, and strictly adhere to, Laboratory/Branch/Division and Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA) requirements.
  • Prepare reports of data collected, tests performed and laboratory documents as required.
  • Assist with the establishment of procedures for Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) of sequence data analysis in the context of the specific projects.  Provide recommendations and feedback to Laboratory and Branch personnel on CLIA and QMS regulations for informatics methods for VPD surveillance.
  • Provide laboratory coordination and support for outbreak responses, carriage studies and other lab-based epidemiological investigations.
  • Comply with Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) and Quality Management regulations.  Assist with the establishment of procedures for Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) of sequence data analysis in the context of the specific projects.  Provide recommendations and feedback to Laboratory and Branch personnel on CLIA and QMS regulations for informatics methods for VPD surveillance.
  • Participate in other laboratory duties as necessary.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Microbiology, Biology, Molecular Biology or a field related to the requirements of the position.

Required:

  • Experience with real-time PCR, bacterial culture, and other standard laboratory methods
  • Experience working with infectious agents in a laboratory setting
  • Knowledge of biosafety requirements for research being performed
  • Experience writing project reports, research protocols and standard operating procedures
  • Must have proof of immunization for Hepatitis B and Meningitis
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Documentation of daily work with good laboratory practice compliance
  • Organizational skills demonstrating high attention to detail and the ability to organize multiple priorities
  • Strong interpersonal skills required to work within a multidisciplinary team
  • Ability to work independently and yet maintain the flexibility to respond to requests for support of ongoing projects
  • Willingness to support emergency response as needed

Desirable:

  • Experience working in a CLIA environment
  • Experience working with sequencing based typing methods (Sanger Sequencing and Whole Genome Sequencing)
  • Experience working in a similar capacity in a Public Health setting

Language Skills:

  • The candidate must possess excellent oral and written communication skills in English
