Position Description: ISGlobal is seeking an enthusiastic, organized, and autonomous PhD candidate who is interested in applying for funding to develop a PhD project in the context of the Health Systems Group’s research on policy and public health responses to the hepatitis C virus. The candidate will be 50% dedicated to serving as study coordinator of Hep-CORE (https://www.elpa- info.org/project/hep-core-study), an ongoing study that monitors whether European governments are implementing recommended measures to progress toward HCV elimination.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has established the ambitious global target of eliminating HCV as a major public health threat by 2030. It is critically important for governments worldwide to implement the policy measures recommended by WHO and other public health experts in order to treat people who are chronically infected with HCV and to prevent new infections. The Hep-CORE study, the first multi- country policy monitoring effort of its kind, has utilised patient group input since 2016 to report on national-level policy responses to viral hepatitis in European countries. The PhD candidate will serve as the Hep-CORE study coordinator while also pursuing synergistic research interests. Possible focal areas for the PhD thesis include the role of civil society in driving progress against HCV; the public health impact of late presentation for HCV care; and micro- elimination of HCV in specific populations such as people who inject drugs and people with HIV/HCV coinfection.

Main Tasks and Duties: *Apply for PhD grants and develop a thesis on one of the central issues addressed in the Health Systems Research Group’s viral hepatitis projects. *Support the PI and co-investigators in the daily functioning of the research projects. *Coordinate daily activities (data collection and follow-up). *Facilitate communication and coordination among investigators including the study group(s). *Manage data and prepare analytical plan(s) and statistical analysis. *Prepare project reports and other documentation. *Manage agenda and scheduling of meetings and submission deadlines. *Assist in any other activity related to infectious diseases and health systems.

Qualifications: *Master’s degree in public health, global health or related field. *Training in quantitative research methods (with demonstrated experience; ideal candidate will also have some training in qualitative and social science research methods). *Excellent organizational and time management skills. *Ability to effectively work both as a team member and independently. *Excellent computer skills: MS Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook software or equivalent plus statistical programs (eg SPSS, Stata). Social media proficiency desirable (Twitter, LinkedIn). *English (fluent) required and Spanish (intermediate level) desirable. Must have excellent written English skills; shortlisted candidates will be asked to provide examples of original writing in English. *Familiarity with the conventions for reporting original research in scientific publications (e.g., the appropriate structure for the introduction, methodology, results and discussion sections). *Ability to accurately describe other researchers’ findings and to cite the information using standard referencing conventions, as well as to manage all citations in an article and format references correctly. *Ability to use PubMed/Medline and other major databases to conduct literature searches. *A publishing track record with at least 2 peer-reviewed articles published or submitted.
