Position Description: Laboratory Analytical Specialist BCS Laboratories is looking for an experienced environmental Cryptosporidium analyst to join our Water Quality Laboratory. The candidate shall have experience in Microscopic analysis and detection of Cryptosporidium and Giardia in environmental samples and possesses protozoan analysis experience. An analyst whom will be able to qualify as a primary for EPA Method 1623/1623.1 immediately or within months of hire. Experience analyzing phytoplankton, zooplankton and bacteria is also desired, although not required. This position will report to the Cryptosporidium Principal Analyst/ Laboratory Section Supervisor for Microbiology. Desirable skills are: • Knowledge of applicable microbiological analysis, including Cryptosporidium, Giardia, bacteria, phytoplankton and zooplankton. • Knowledge of theory, principals, practices and methods used in complex microbiological, chemical and physical analysis and testing of water and environmental samples including fluorescence assay microscopy. • Ability to use, maintain, and troubleshoot complex laboratory equipment, including microscopes, in the analysis of samples. • Skill in using microscopic analysis to accurately identify and characterize Cryptosporidium and Giardia by specialized microscopy techniques. • Knowledge of federal and state laws, procedures and regulations governing drinking water systems and Cryptosporidium and bacteriological treatment, monitoring, analysis, quality assurance, record keeping and reporting. Responsibilities and Duties The laboratory technician will work with our team of microbiologists to perform routine laboratory prep and execute assays for the enumeration of pathogens and environmental microbial indicators. The applicant primary responsibility is the analysis of water samples for cryptosporidium and giardia as per EPA methodology (EPA1623)

Qualifications: An ability to work independently and to interact and communicate successfully with others in the laboratory and with collaborators outside the laboratory is essential. Applicants shall have working knowledge and experience with standard microbiology practices that may include standard methods for microbial detection and enumeration, and laboratory methodologies and operations, including but not limited to SOP writing, QA/QC practice, statistical analysis, data interpretation, and report preparation. The successful candidate shall possess a B.S. (or equivalent) in one of the biological sciences (preferably microbiology) or one year of relevant experience. A background in QA/QC and environmental science laboratory setting will be of great benefit. Cell culture experience is a plus. Experience with environmental matrices including water, wastewater, biosolids and soils are desirable.
