IHRC, Inc. provides scientific, information management, management consulting, bioinformatics, and administrative program support to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other Federal and private sector clients.  The successful candidate will be a full-time employee of IHRC, Inc., and will be assigned to the Parasitic Diseases Branch (PDB), Division of Parasitic Diseases and Malaria (DPDM), Center for Global Health (CGH), at the CDC, 1600 Clifton Road, Atlanta, GA, to provide technical and laboratory support services. 

SCOPE OF WORK

The Laboratory Technician will provide technical and laboratory support services for the development of training materials and provision of training to personnel in countries conducting Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) control and elimination.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop training materials (bench aids, videos, web materials) that can be used for initial as well as refresher trainings.
  • Evaluate sample sets to assess post-training proficiency testing.
  • Provide training in person and remotely for programs at either country or regional level at 6 sites. This could be coupled with other training (e.g., Transmission Assessment Surveys), as appropriate.
  • Develop, plan, and execute annual proficiency testing protocols for laboratory personnel in ongoing programs.
  • As new tests, especially point of contact (POC), become available, assist with comparisons to existing tests to facilitate their incorporation into World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines.
  • Provide advice and guidance on high quality monitoring and evaluation (M&E) for existing or new tests for lymphatic filariasis (LF), trachoma, schistosomiasis, soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) and onchocerciasis programs. Training materials will be developed with the goal of being useful in many settings rather than country-specific.
  • Assume responsibility that incoming specimens are processed and triaged maintaining a "chain-of-custody".
  • Calibrate and operate laboratory instruments that are necessary to perform specialized tests, analyses and other standard procedures in conducting experiments and studies.
  • Develop and validate standard operating procedures including performing experiments to define optimal test performance.
  • Keep records of all activities including inquiries and responses provided.
  • Provide updates on requests for assistance, as needed.
  • Conduct evaluation of laboratory experiments to determine whether data generated are accurate and valid; identify unusual or unexpected results and their probable causes.
  • Place and track orders of laboratory reagents, laboratory supplies, and equipment needs.
  • Prepare written documents and reports. Present findings as required.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in microbiology or a related biological science.

Required:

  • Experience performing and interpreting microscopy, ELISA, PCR, and point of contact (POC) tests.
  • Knowledge of standard laboratory procedures and biosafety guidelines.
  • Knowledge of and experience working with database management systems.
  • Ability to write scientific reports.
  • Good oral and written communications skills.
  • Willingness and ability to travel on approximately 8 international trips totaling at up to 2 ½ months of travel during a 12 month period.
  • Must have proof of immunization for Hepatitis B.

Desirable:

  • Specific experience with Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) diagnosis or NTD test development preferred.
  • French language proficiency (reading/writing/speaking) preferred but not required.

Language Skills:

  • The candidate must possess excellent oral and written communication skills in English
