Position Description: Job Title: Environmental Health Technician I (seasonal) Agency: Fairfax County Health Department Salary: Starting at $17.25/hr., depending on experience Hours: 7:30 - 4:00 Location: 10777 Main St., Fairfax, VA 22030

Description: Works as part of the Division of Environmental Health, in the Disease Carrying Insects Program, primarily performing fieldwork associated with vector- borne disease surveillance and control activities in Fairfax County. Duties may include mosquito and tick sample collection, participation in public education and outreach activities, assisting in investigations and other site evaluations. Attends regular staff meetings and other duties as assigned.

Note: Multiple positions available. Typically works up to 40 hours per week from 7:30 to 4:00. Interviews will be held ASAP and positions will be open until filled. The position is seasonal and may extend through October 2018, depending on program needs.

E-Status - This position may not exceed 1560 hours per calendar year. Individuals in this position are eligible for limited employee benefits (including medical, vision and dental insurance coverage) and participation in flexible spending programs, but not eligible to earn leave or receive holiday pay.

G-Status - This position is may not exceed 900 hours per calendar year. Individuals in these positions are not eligible for health benefits, to earn leave or receive holiday pay.

Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications: Preferred candidates will have experience and knowledge related to environmental health programs and service areas. Working knowledge of personal computers and ability to use field inspection and/or surveillance equipment. Strong oral communication and customer service skills. Ability to work well in a team environment.

Minimum Qualifications: Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to graduation from high school or G.E.D. issued by a state department of education, with courses in chemistry and/or biology and two years of acceptable laboratory experience.

Certifications and Licenses Required: Valid driver?s license.

Physical Requirements: Ability to walk, negotiate/traverse sites with unleveled terrain and/or narrow passages; crouch, kneel, bend, reach, stretch, climb ladders, use test equipment, lift and carry instruments and other objects weighing up to 25 pounds, wear personal protective equipment, and operate personal computer. Ability to conduct inspections/investigations in extreme temperature environments. Ability to operate motor vehicle in adverse weather conditions.

Special Requirements: The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and a check of the Child Protective Services Registry to the satisfaction of the employer.

Organization Description: The bite of an infected mosquito, tick or other disease carrying insect may result in a life-changing illness, such as West Nile virus or Lyme disease. The Health Department?s Disease Carrying Insects Program works to minimize the threat of mosquito-borne and tick-borne diseases through an integrated approach to pest management that includes active monitoring, control measures, and public outreach and education to help protect county residents. Preventing mosquito bites and tick bites is the best way to avoid the diseases they may carry.
