Position Description: Job Summary:

Acts as a champion for the organization, continuously communicating the mission and vison of Ci3 to staff, faculty, and students affiliated with the center and external audiences. Amplifies the work of senior management and serves as a liaison to academic departments, professional organizations, administrative units of the University, as well as external collaborators and audiences. The Center Director reports directly to the Center's faculty director, Dr. Melissa Gilliam


•Manages the day-to-day operations of the Center with attention to the production of grants, papers, and products •Serves as a liaison to academic departments, professional organizations and administrative units of the University and within the field of sexual and reproductive health and adolescent development locally, nationally, and globally •Serves as a highly motivated manager and relationship builder with experience working in either an academic and/or a nonprofit research/policy center environment •Oversees staff recruitment and retention, budgeting, strategic planning and project implementation •Works directly with the Center Administrator to oversee the financial management of the organization •Works closely with faculty, senior management and the University development offices to think through the management of donors and build strategic partnerships •Acts as the portfolio manager for Ci3, building out the center’s research and products with an eye towards scaling and implementation •Designs and facilitates development pipelines for all research projects and products with support from staff and senior management •Researches, sources, evaluates, develops, manages and stewards portfolio of funding and collaboration opportunities with external entities in partnership with Founder, Lab Directors, Research Director Center Administrator, and University development office. •Contributes to grant writing •Oversees pipeline of research proposals for outside granting agencies and private fundraising with the Research Director and Center Administrator •Supports the Founder, Research Director and Lab Directors in connecting with faculty, students, and other leaders across campus, and within the sexual and reproductive health field, to foster multi-disciplinary research and programming within the Center •Creates a strategic outreach plan in partnership with the communications team to disseminate the research and products created by Ci3 with external audiences via speaking engagements, events and social media, toward creating a strong brand for the Center •Works closely with the communications team to produce an annual report and other collateral material, a monthly e-newsletter, social media and other media strategies, and manage website maintenance •Leads the fundraising efforts for the Center and supports broader fundraising efforts in partnership with the development offices •Builds partnerships between non-affiliated university centers, faculty, staff, and to make the Ci3 a valuable resource to The University of Chicago and contributes to the broad goals of creating a stronger campus community •Represents the Center and its work as appropriate •Stays abreast of policy and program developments in adolescent sexual and reproductive health, games, storytelling, and design

Qualifications: Education, Experience and Certifications:

•A minimum of three years administrative, managerial, or related experience required •Master's degree required, M.B.A. preferred •A minimum of three years of program/project management experience required •Supervisory experience required, supervisory experience with matrixed teams preferred •Experience in organizing, building, and maintaining institutional infrastructures central to the strategic day-to-day implementation of a dynamic and complex program required •Experience in research management, program management, and strategic planning preferred •Experience with the conduct of related social science, health or clinical research preferred •Experience with developing foundation or federal grants preferred •Experience in presenting to academic and community organizations preferred •Experience in adolescent or global health preferred •Experience in technology and scaling preferred

Technical Knowledge or Skills:

•Demonstrated proficiency in building collaborative relationships with diverse constituencies required •Ability to navigate the challenges of working within a complex, decentralized academic environment required •Ability to successfully manage a workload which balances long-range planning with the unanticipated daily demands of managing a busy operation required •Demonstrated strong skills as coach and leader required •Financial management experience required •Skill in developing strategies for successful cultivation and solicitation of annual, major and principal gifts required •Knowledge of or experience in adolescent sexual and reproductive health and family planning preferred •Excellent verbal and written communications skills required •Willingness and ability to travel and work some evenings and weekends required •Knowledge of standard computer programs (e.g. Microsoft Office suite, standard email and internet applications) required •Comfort with ambiguity and experimentation. •The ability to work in dynamic conditions, transition quickly between collaborative and individual work. •The ability to navigate and work with institutional hierarchies. •Strong planning, facilitation, organization and documentation skills. •Compelling written, spoken, and visual communication skills. •Highly collaborative nature, drawing motivation from effective interdisciplinary teamwork.

Organization Description: Founded in 2012, Ci3 is a research center at the University of Chicago addressing the social and structural determinants of adolescent sexual and reproductive health. At Ci3, we envision a world in which all youth emerge into adulthood with agency over their bodies and futures. Ci3 houses three labs: The Game Changer Chicago Design Lab, The Transmedia Story Lab, and The Design Thinking Lab. Within these labs, we create games, digital narratives, and design human-centered clinical interventions with and for youth. Our work is domestic and international and focuses on young people marginalized by race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, and gender identity. Ci3 is committed to empowering young people, conducting innovative research, and uncovering opportunities for policy and systemic change.
