Position Description: A full-time position is available in the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, GA. The incumbent will work as a microbiologist in the Division of Tuberculosis Elimination (DTBE) Laboratory Branch (LB) under the direction of the Reference Laboratory Team (RLT) Lead. RLT conducts CDC’s Molecular Detection of Drug Resistance (MDDR) clinical service for rapid detection of drug resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis and growth-based drug susceptibility testing for both first and second-line antituberculosis drugs. This CLIA-compliant service provides information used by clinicians to guide therapy decisions for treatment of tuberculosis.

As a microbiologist, the incumbent will evaluate and perform molecular and growth- based testing in a CLIA regulated and ISO accredited environment. The incumbent will aid in an evaluation of the transition of MDDR to a next generation sequencing platform, to include bioinformatics analyses for NGS.

Specific activities may include: • Performing molecular and growth-based drug susceptibility testing as part of the MDDR service • Perform work in BSL-2 and BSL-3 environments using various standard techniques, such as traditional PCR, Sanger sequencing, pyrosequencing, growth-based drug susceptibility testing, and bacterial culture • Molecular test validation within a CLIA regulated environment • Implementing molecular assays for the detection of mutations associated with drug resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis using next generation sequencing (NGS) platforms • Evaluate the use of NGS for the MDDR service • Incorporate CLIA compliant NGS into the MDDR algorithm • Use bioinformatics tools to analyze NGS data • Participating in Branch and Team meetings • Assisting in drafting and reviewing internal documents and reports under a Quality Management System (QMS) • Maintaining communication with Team Lead of the Reference Lab• Ensuring laboratory equipment maintenance and calibration • Ensure the accuracy, reliability, and timeliness of patient test result

Qualifications: The incumbent should have a Master’s or PhD in microbiology, molecular genetics, or other related discipline. Proficiency in performing NGS and analyzing sequencing data from these platforms is required. Some experience working in a CLIA regulated environment is preferred. Excellent oral and written communication skills are required.
