Position Description: CDC is recruiting for the executive position of Director for the Office of Science, located in the Office of the Deputy Director for Public Health Science and Surveillance (proposed) in CDC’s headquarters in Atlanta.

The director will provide vision and leadership in science innovation, research, ethics, and science administration, ensuring continuity and commitment to long-term sc scientific investments to ensure the ac achievement of CDC's overarching health pr protection goals, both nationally and gl globally, and will:

•Execute broad operating authority for o overall planning, direction and management o of the CDC/ATSDR science programs, •Participate in overall management planning s sessions in which program direction, f feasibility of program changes and e expansions, and allocation of funds are c considered, •Evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency o of program operations in relation to o objectives and in relation to legislative, b budgetary and program planning, •Collaborate with other top management o officials on the development and i implementation of long range plans and their b budget impact, •Serve as the science advisor in shaping and d directing science policies and plans for the a agency and in providing leadership and d direction in developing, improving, and f fully utilizing CDC's capacity in public h health science and research, •Work with the agency’s senior leadership team and other senior staff in the centers/offices, and external state and local public health and academic organizations to develop national center specific research agendas and an agency-wide p public health science agenda, and strategies f for funding and implementation, •Work with other DHHS agencies, e.g. the N National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the F Food and Drug Administration (FDA), to e ensure coordination of scientific effort, l lack of overlap in research activities, and t to address potential research gaps. • Provide scientific guidance and leadership to international, national, state, or local government agencies, universities, health-related organizations, p private and public foundations and p professional associations, public health p practitioners, elected officials, the legal c community, and law enforcement and emergency r response organizations, and • Lead a diverse staff of scientific, technical and administrative professionals responsible for carrying out the office’s sc scientific mission.
