Position Description: The Illinois Department of Public Health, Office of Health Protection/Division of Infectious Diseases has an opening for Division Chief (Senior Public Service Administrator, Option 6) in the Springfield Central Office. This individual is responsible for administering a comprehensive statewide program for the control of selected infectious diseases, including veterinary public health. Serves as policy-making official for the agency’s Infectious Disease program. Responsible for development of personnel, budget and fiscal documents involving the State’s Infectious Diseases Program. Speaks on behalf of the Director as the Infectious Diseases’ Division Chief over the Sexually Transmitted Diseases Section, the Communicable Disease Control Section, the Immunization Section, the Tuberculosis Control Section and the HIV/AIDS Control Section; Manages the Division response to bioterrorism. Supervises subordinate staff through lower level management.

Qualifications: Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of four years of college; Prefers a Master’s Degree such as MPH, or Master’s in Public Administration or other related disciplines, and/or a PhD, MD, DO, or DVM degree. Requires experience equivalent to four years of progressively responsible administrative experience in public health or in a local health department. Prefers experience as a Center for Disease Control Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer. Requires ability to travel. Working knowledge of statistical software including SAS and Microsoft software products including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc. is highly desirable.

Organization Description: The mission of IDPH is to promote health through the prevention and control of disease and injury. And the agency has been doing just that since it was first organized in 1877 with a staff of three and a two-year budget of $5,000. IDPH, which is one of the state's oldest agencies, now has an annual budget of about $325 million in state and federal funds, headquarters in Springfield and Chicago, seven regional offices located around the state, three laboratories and 1,100 employees. The Department is organized into six offices, each of which addresses a distinct area of public health. Each office operates and supports numerous ongoing programs and is prepared to respond to extraordinary situations as they arise.
