Position Description: American Kidney Fund (AKF) has long recognized the link between education, and the provision of quality health care and the improvement of clinical outcomes related to kidney disease. Our professional continuing education programs address the learning needs and interests of renal professionals, while our public, patient, and caregiver educational resources seek to empower and support those wishing to prevent and those affected by kidney disease. AKF supports clinical research focused on improving patient outcomes through our Clinical Scientist in Nephrology fellowships, and we are building a network of Kidney Health Coaches who can extend the reach of AKF’s prevention and education efforts into communities to empower those at risk for kidney disease.

The Director of Education will be responsible for the development, evaluation and general oversight of AKF’s public and professional education programs. This includes but is not limited to content of the AKF website, educational materials, online courses, the Clinical Scientist in Nephrology (CSN) fellowship program, Conference Exhibit program, and the Calendar Kids program. The Director of Education must exhibit a clear understanding of the importance of cultural competence, the impact of social determinants of health as it relates to chronic kidney disease, and the ability to apply this understanding to Public Education and Professional Education programs at AKF. Superior writing skills is essential for this position, particularly the application of the principles of health communication; with the ability to transform highly technical language into content that meets the needs of AKF’s target audiences. This position will supervise a staff of three, full-time employees and, along with the Senior Director of Health Initiatives & Education, will be responsible for developing a strategy and vision for the entire education department.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: • Develops, implements, and evaluates public and professional education programs by conducting assessments, creating content, and designing formal program evaluation plans to determine program effectiveness, with vision toward meeting the needs of populations at risk for, and those affected by kidney disease • Consults and collaborates with Senior Director, staff, internal AKF teams, and renal professionals to develop and review educational materials, media, and other content related to kidney disease • Collaborates with Development, Marketing and Communications, IT, and other AKF departments to proactively and successfully market webinars, professional courses, and public education courses. • Collaborates with development team to leverage sponsorship areas of focus to align with organization mission and goals within the component of professional and public education • Provides direct supervision and demonstrates quality leadership to staff responsible for educational programming; while assessing staff professional development needs, providing constructive feedback, and affirmation • In conjunction with the Senior Director of Health Initiatives & Education, sets the overall strategy for education initiatives and ensures that AKF’s public and professional education programs are complementary and cohesive. • Keeps abreast of current research and guidelines within the space of kidney disease by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining and cultivating professional networks; participating in professional organizations. • Incorporates demonstrated expertise in health communication, principals of knowledge transfer and acquisition in order to develop, refine, and promote kidney disease education courses • Establishes and applies policies and/or procedures through the product portfolio for curriculum and product development and maintenance, including content, quality, evaluation, design expectations and distribution • Conducts needs assessment prior to developing all public education materials; as well as testing, clinical review and evaluation. Develops proposals and contracts as appropriate and requested • Develops and manages budget, incorporating sound fiduciary responsibility; interprets financial data and recommends contingency plans • Facilitates public, patient, provider, and caregiver education by leveraging understanding of the learner cultural and religious practices, emotional barriers, desire and motivation to learn, physical and/or cognitive limitations, language barriers, and readiness to learn. • Selects, adapts, and customizes education courses and materials for various target audiences by evaluating available fact sheets, printed materials, videos, webinars, and external resources in alignment with best practices and industry standards within field of kidney disease • Supports leadership needs related to the Medical Advisory, Clinical Scientist in Nephrology and Prevention/Education Committees • Administers the Calendar Kids program within budget levels and increase sustainability • Administers the Clinical Scientist in Nephrology program within budget • Provides logistical, educational content and/or administrative support for outreach events, toolkit / awareness initiatives, AKF website • Provides support for attending exhibits; representing AKF through superior customer support, knowledge of AKF’s programs and services in a professional manner • Works with staff and Senior Director of Health Initiatives and Education to develop new, and improve quality of courses and programs by researching, evaluating, and designing processes, or implementing changes • Identifies program successes and areas in need of improvement by maintaining rapport with potential and current partners, and others in a position to understand emerging patient, provider, caregiver, and public education topics • Enhances AKF reputation and reach by creating and implementing new and varied education programs, and exploring opportunities which add value to public, patient, caregiver, and professional communities

Qualifications: • Master of Public Health, Dietetics, Nutrition, or other applicable field • CHES or MCHES certified preferred • Demonstrated knowledge of, and at least 5-7 years of experience applying principals of health behaviors and health promotion, with focus on community and professional health education programs and courses • At least 5-7 years of experience planning, designing, implementing, and evaluating health education programs and professional courses • Experience in accreditation criteria for continuing education • At least 3-5 years of supervisory experience • Demonstrated proficiency in instructional design with experience in e- learning course development. • Superior written and oral communication skills • Understanding of requirements of and process of delivering professional certification • Appreciation for, understanding of, and experience working with diverse communities: age, race, cultural, language, religion, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status • Track record of developing and fostering relationships with external partners and volunteers • Excellent management, work organization, and formal reporting skills • Bilingual in Spanish a plus • Proficient with Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, WebEx and in course development tools • Experience in non-profit health organization and nephrology care preferred • Ability to prioritize and handle a number of projects simultaneously and complete work in a timely manner • Ability to handle confidential matters with a high level of integrity • Occasional travel required • Ability to lift exhibit materials up to 40 pounds
