Position Description: The Director of Health Initiatives has primary responsibility for developing the strategic vision and making operational American Kidney Fund’s (AKF) nationwide health outreach activities and initiatives. The programs and initiatives that are part of this effort currently provide education, public health screenings and outreach to populations at risk for kidney disease. The Director of Health Initiatives ensures that programs help increase awareness of the risks of kidney disease among the general public, especially those at higher risk for the disease. Responsibilities include strategic program development, goal setting; program planning, implementation, and evaluation; project management; and budget management. The Director of Health Initiatives must exhibit a clear understanding of importance of cultural competence, the impact of social determinants of health as it relates to chronic disease, and the ability to apply this understanding to Health Initiatives programs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: • Reports to Senior Director of Health Initiatives and Education, providing evidence-based recommendations for program development, program improvement, and operational efficiency • Responsible for delivering elements of the Strategic Operating Plan which address providing evidence-based public, education, targeted health screenings, and engagement for the those at risk for kidney disease • Manages all health initiatives screening events from concept to service delivery for small-scale events, large-scale events, and large partner screenings. Fully responsible for all program planning, delivery, evaluation, and reporting activities • Supervises a large Health Initiatives team of on-site and remote employees, setting goals, capturing metrics, and establishing policies and guidelines to ensure the success of the Know Your Kidneys program • Accomplishes staff job results by providing mentorship, coaching, and leadership to team and staff; reliably identifying opportunities for professional growth of self and staff; planning, monitoring, and objectively appraising job results; conducting training; implementing effective systems • Ensures staff and volunteers are sufficiently oriented, trained, have opportunities for professional growth, and are regularly given formal and/or informal constructive feedback and affirmation related to job performance. • Develops and implements standard operating procedures (SOPs) and tools to assure consistent and high quality delivery of screening events. Conducts necessary process improvement activities to capture lessons learned and update Strategic Operating Plans accordingly • Conducts frequent and ongoing evaluation activities, including process, outcome, and impact evaluations, to assess the effectiveness of all health screening events • Collaborates with Senior Director to develop and provide leadership to subordinate staff to implement programs in a manner that demonstrates cultural competence, and a clear understanding of social determinants of health, as it relates to chronic kidney disease • Proactively and promptly identifies both immediate and ongoing systemic issues in a manner that demonstrates pragmatism, resourcefulness, creativity, and leadership • Provides programmatic vision and recommends overall strategic direction for all health initiative efforts, including changes in strategic approaches and tactics to ensure that efforts are optimal to address changing needs and environment. • Collaborates across departments, including Communications, Fundraising, Government Relations, Operations, to assure successful screening events and ensures the Health Initiatives team maintains the same positive collaboration • Actively participates with Fundraising department on reviewing and providing input to grant proposals and ensuring supporting contributors receive the benefits outlined in their sponsorship agreements • Develops standardized educational and program delivery materials, following internal branding guidelines • Manages database and compiles and disseminates screening and follow-up results • Initiates and supports partnerships and alliances for capacity-building, resource sharing, and promoting kidney health • Develops annual budget and manages program expenses within budgetary constraints • Proactively identifies opportunities for competitive vendor services, including lab fees and other services, skillfully negotiates vendor contract terms as needed, and provides price analyses to Senior Director, and/or VP by request • Ability to independently create and deliver polished, customized presentations to internal staff and external audiences, such as leaders of private and public organizations, lay community groups, potential and existing partners, and sponsors • Commendably represents AKF at appropriate events and venues in a manner reflective of organizational interests, values, and standards • Superior verbal and written communication skills • Requires 25% travel and ability to work some evening and week-end hours • Undertakes other duties as assigned to ensure the overall success of the Office of Patient Services and Kidney Disease Education

Qualifications: • Bachelor’s degree in health-related field required; Master’s degree in Public Health or related degree preferred • 3 to 5 years’ experience in program development and evaluation in community or minority health required • 3 years’ supervisory experience required • Proficiency in MS Office and knowledge of Microsoft CRM or similar databases a plus • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills • Ability to work in a collaborative team environment • Must be well organized and detail oriented • Ability to prioritize and handle a number of projects simultaneously and complete work in a timely manner • Able to work effectively within a team framework as well as independently • Ability to handle confidential matters with a high level of integrity • Budget and data management experience • Event planning experience • Position is located in the AKF National office in Rockville, MD • The position requires a vehicle, valid drivers’ license and adequate insurance coverage. • Ability to lift 30 pounds • Fluency in Spanish a plus • Certifications in CHES, MCHES, CMP, or PMP a plus
