The Department of Applied Health Science has a long-standing commitment to scholarly inquiry in a broad spectrum of areas emphasizing prevention of health problems and promotion of healthy lifestyles. Research and creative activity in the Department include both basic and applied work in program planning and development, evaluation of the effectiveness of instruction, examination of lifestyle and health behavior in relation to nutrition, exercise, stress, alcohol, tobacco and other drug abuse, individual development and family health, communicable disease, sexual health, and related areas.

The Department of Applied Health Science is committed to preventing disease and promoting the health and well-being of individuals, families, and communities through research, teaching, and service related to healthy lifestyles. The Department offers undergraduate, masters, and doctoral degrees in various areas of applied health science.

The Chair of the Department of Applied Health Science provides research and intellectual leadership, strategic vision and administrative oversight to all aspects of the Department, and advances and promotes the Department’s mission of scholarly research, academic excellence in education and in civic engagement and service.

Reporting directly to the Dean of the School of Public Health, the Chair of AHS will oversee the Department faculty that include 25 who are tenured or in tenure- track, a similar number in Scientist or Research Associate positions, and ~15 additional faculty that are in Clinical, Teaching, or Visiting positions. The Department has nine research centers and offers Bachelor of Science degrees in Dietetics, Health Education-Secondary Teacher Preparation, Human Development and Family Studies, Nutrition Science, Safety, and Youth Development, a BSPH in Community Health, 9 undergraduate minors, Master of Science degrees in Nutrition Science, Safety Management, School and College Health Education, a Master of Public Health in Behavioral, Social, and Community Health, and Public Health Administration, and a PhD in Health Behavior. The Chair is also a member of the Dean’s leadership team and plays a collaborative role in the direction and implementation of strategic initiatives that impact the School as a whole. As the central member of the leadership team within the School, the Chair will build and sustain collaborative partnerships with other departments and academic units both within and beyond the School of Public Health. The School’s next Chair of Applied Health Science will oversee the Department’s annual operating budget of nearly $8 million and external research funding of $3- $4 million.

Qualifications: The successful candidate will be a nationally recognized public health scholar with a record of independent externally-funded research published in high-quality peer-reviewed journals; the successful candidate will have demonstrated collaborative leadership and administrative skills with a clear commitment to both undergraduate and graduate education.

The Chair should possess an earned Ph.D. in public health or a related field and/or an M.D. and should possess a record of recognized achievement in scholarly research, teaching and service consistent with appointment as a Full Professor.at a major research university.
