Position Description: Seeking qualified candidates for a 16- month term statistician position. Candidate will analyze large data sets and develop statistical analysis programs to continually identify new drugs and errors in ICD coding of drug overdose deaths and produce reports of the results.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Create easy to use program(s) to identify coding errors, potential new drugs, state-based data quality issues, and non-specific codes for follow-up. Program(s) should be easily modifiable and produce topic specific reports and record listings for follow-up. 2. Create documentation of programs developed and guidelines for use with assigned staff, as appropriate. 3. Document a process to a) continually update the auto coding system once errors have been identified, b) routes newly identified drugs for classification and c) routes manual coding error patterns for staff training. 4. Refine and enhance state-based profile reports on the quality of cause of death data to be used in ongoing efforts to improve the specificity and accuracy of cause of death information. Create specifications for reports and test results. 5. Create a set of recommended refinements to system interactive edits to improve drug-related information at the point of entry. Based on feedback from users (states and DVS), create a set of requirements for an existing or new API.

Qualifications: MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIRED: Bachelor’s degree in Epidemiology or Statistics and/or Master’s degree in Statistics.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Three (3) years of progressively responsible data analytics and statistics experience. Previous experience in quality & process improvement and related public health experience. Proficiency in statistical methods. Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office software, including Word, Excel (Visual Basic), PowerPoint, Visio (or other flowcharting application), and statistical software, such as SAS, is required.

MINIMUM LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION REQUIRED BY LAW: None.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: Superior written and verbal communication skills including the ability to present ideas and data in a clear and compelling manner are requested. Experience with SAS is strongly preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES: Strong critical thinking skills. Ability to improve and expand knowledge through self-learning, with resources and materials available both within the organization and externally. Understanding of process improvement/quality management methodologies. Ability to develop effective relationships with a broad variety of people from diverse backgrounds. Strong project management and organizational skills. Ability to work with minimal supervision.
