Purpose: This position functions as a microbiologist in the Microbiology section of the Bureau of labs. This position performs diagnostic testing of human, animal and environmental specimens for the presence of Bacteria, Mycobacteria and parasites. This includes Mycobacterial specimen processing, microscopic examination and culture testing of processed specimen material, as well as identification of culture isolates. Identification testing includes acid-fast staining, and real time PCR. Performance of advanced molecular techniques such as Pulsed Field Gel Electrophoresis and Whole Genome Sequencing will also be required. This position is responsible for maintenance of instrumentation and proper handling of dangerous pathogens and chemicals-including carcinogens and neurotoxins
Duties and Responsibilities: • Duty 1 - 40% of time - Perform subtyping on human and environmental isolates for surveillance and outbreak detection of foodborne and other illnesses. Utilizes advanced molecular techniques such as Pulsed Field Gel Electrophoresis and Whole Genome Sequencing. Assist in other laboratory analysis such as PCR testing, EIA, culture set up, susceptibility testing, etc. as assigned. • Duty 2 - 40% of time – Handle, process, and set up specimens for TB culture. This includes inoculating media, smear preparation and staining, examination using visible light and fluorescent ultraviolet illumination microscopy, and identification testing using real time PCR. Assist in preparing chemical reagents, operating, and maintaining testing instruments and equipment. • Duty 3 - 10% of time – Follow all quality control and quality assurance procedures that are in place in the microbiology section. Participate in proficiency testing, perform preventive maintenance and documentation, maintain records of reagent and media production, perform, document and file quality control results, prepare non-conforming event reports, and participate in continuing education activities. • Duty 4 - 10% of time – Other work- related duties as required by management such as preparing chemical reagents, inventory supplies, operate, adjust, and maintain testing instruments and equipment. Participate in studies and research activities. Enter, maintain, validate, communicate, analyze and report patient testing data utilizing e-mail, fax, phone and the StarLIMS system.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Molecular Biology, or Biological Sciences. Experience: At least one year of clinical laboratory experience is preferred.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements: An employee working with specimens of human origin is required to employ “universal precautions” in the laboratory; that is, to treat each specimen as if it were capable of disease transmission and to use personal protection devices such as gloves, safety glasses, and lab coats to prevent contamination. Repetitive pipetting, walking, standing, bending, squatting, transporting, and lifting (limited to less than 40 pounds). Requires working for extended periods of time in a Biological Safety Cabinet (BSC) while wearing a full- length gown, eye protection, N-95 respirator and nitrile gloves. Required to perform testing on highly pathogenic Class III organisms. Works with centrifuges, incubators, water baths, heat blocks, chemical fume hoods and steam autoclaves.
