IHRC, Inc. provides scientific, information management, management consulting, bioinformatics, and administrative program support to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other Federal and private sector clients.  The successful candidate will be assigned to the Laboratory Preparedness and Response Branch (LPRB), Division of Preparedness and Emerging Infections (DPEI), National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic and Infectious Diseases (NCEZID) at CDC, 1600 Clifton Road, Atlanta, GA, and will perform Response Preparedness related services to support the mission of the Branch.


The Molecular Microbiologist will provide on-site laboratory analyses to the Laboratory Preparedness and Response Branch (LPRB) and carry out tasks necessary for research and development of laboratory methods.


  • Develop and evaluate rapid antimicrobial susceptibility tests for bacterial agents. Successful completion of this task includes the following procedures: bacterial culture, conventional and rapid antimicrobial susceptibility testing, nucleic acid and protein extraction methods, PCR, DNA sequencing and DNA sequence analysis, as well as additional molecular analytical methods
  • Assist with validation studies for new or improved assays for the Laboratory Response Network (LRN)
  • Maintain Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) standards for analytical reagents; detailed laboratory notes and summaries of lab results
  • Write abstracts and manuscripts describing assay development



Education and Experience:

  • M.S. with relevant laboratory experience with antimicrobial susceptibility testing and bacterial Select agents, or Ph.D. in microbiology (preferred), biology, or basic medical science


  • At least 5 years clinical laboratory experience in molecular microbiology methods
  • Previous experience working in a BSL-3 environment with bacterial Select agent pathogens
  • Research experience involving preparation and handling of nucleic acid samples, real-time PCR, ELISA, and other standard laboratory molecular methods
  • At least 3 years of experience with clinical laboratory molecular methods
  • Knowledge of biosafety requirements for research being performed
  • Superior organizational and project planning skills requiring minimal supervision
  • Extensive knowledge of scientific and molecular microbiology principles and standard methods
  • Strong interpersonal skills required for team work and extensive interaction with people across CDC and with external partners
  • Strong written and oral presentation skills
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office, Word, Access, Excel, and PowerPoint


  • Previous experience with drug-resistant or multi-drug resistant bacteria testing
  • Demonstrated skills and experience writing project reports, research protocols and manuscripts
  • Previous experience with implementation of a laboratory Quality Management System (QMS)
  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize new ideas for project research
  • Demonstrated experience developing real- time PCR or ELISA based in vitro diagnostic assays
  • Experience in antimicrobial susceptibility testing preferred

Language Skills:

  • The candidate must possess excellent oral and written communication skills in English   


  • Must be United States citizen or permanent resident or have authorization for employment in the United States
