Position Description: As a Radiation Health Physicist, you'll perform the full range of radiation safety inspections of state X-ray facilities to ensure compliance with applicable regulations and to keep radiation exposures to patients, workers, and the public as low as reasonably achievable. You'll also provide technical assistance to X-ray registrants on radiation safety and to reduce patient dose, participate in team inspections, and investigate incidents involving X- ray devices to help protect and improve the health of all people in Washington State. This position is within the Office of Radiation Protection, Division of Environmental Public Health. We support the department's mission by working with local governments and other agencies in the areas of safe drinking water, food safety, shellfish protection, radiation safety, wastewater management, pesticide exposures, vector-borne disease, general environmental health and safety issues, and health risk assessments.

What will you be doing? – Duties include: -- Perform the full range of radiation safety inspections of X-ray facilities to determine compliance with applicable regulations.

-- Schedule inspections with facilities.

-- Review files of existing facilities prior to inspection to gain an understanding of the facility.

-- Conduct appropriate inspection procedures according to facility complexity using appropriate X- ray diagnostic equipment.

-- Use radiation detection instruments and best practice knowledge, consults with facility's doctors, technicians and/or health physics staff to reduce doses.

-- Examine X-ray equipment to make sure all settings are optimal and then records "dose saved."

-- Perform tests on film processors to ensure the facilities processors work properly.

-- Providing technical assistance on radiation safety and X-ray device-related topics.

-- Investigate incidents or accidents involving X-ray devices to determine the cause(s) and needed corrective action, documents actions, and follows up as needed.

-- Prepares for and responds to radiological and other emergencies.

Qualifications: -- Option 1: One year as a Radiation Health Physicist 1.


-- Option 2: A Bachelor's degree or higher in physical science (physics, chemistry), engineering (all branches), or biological science; AND two (2) years of experience in an official radiation control program. OR

-- Option 3: An Associate's degree in an accredited Radiologic Technologist program; AND one (1) or more years (full-time equivalency) of radiologic technologist job experience.
