Position Description:

JOB TITLE: Industrial Hygienist

POSITION NUMBER: 1810-99999-IH- 01

TRAVEL: As required to fulfill the responsibilities of the position

IHRC, Inc. provides scientific, information management, management consulting, bioinformatics, and administrative program support to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other Federal and private sector clients.  The successful candidate will be a full-time employee of IHRC, Inc., and will provide industrial hygienist support services.


The Industrial Hygienist will provide support for initiatives to ensure that work practices and environmental conditions are in compliance with published health standards and regulations.


  • Conduct health and safety inspections to determine compliance with published health standards and regulations.
  • Perform special health studies and promote practices that are consistent with the goals and principles of industrial hygiene, requiring a comprehensive knowledge of a wide variety of chemicals and work practices affecting worker health.
  • Conduct inspections to observe work practices and environmental conditions for hazards to health and safety, and to detect violations of published health standards.
  • Consult with leadership and other stakeholders regarding the nature and purpose of the inspection and the procedures which will be followed; advise management of results and whether a return visit is necessary to take further samples.
  • Conduct walk-through of worksite, noting which operations could constitute potential health problems, take samples where ceiling limits have been established, and determine necessity to take longer samples on a subsequent visit.
  • Advise management of preliminary findings, discuss, in general terms, possible abatement procedures.
  • Prepare reports of inspection findings, including supporting documents, and recommendations.
  • Follow up to ensure that required abatement measures are completed, which, in some cases, require additional inspections.
  • Provide instructions, training, and advice to other workers.
  • Perform special studies and participate in the development of safety policy or in new applications of existing policy.



Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; or a Bachelor’s degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene


  • Knowledge of industrial hygiene concepts, principles, and practices applicable to the conduct of occupational health inspections of a wide range of environments, including large and complex industrial operations
  • Knowledge required to recognize environmental factors and stresses associated with complex work operations, and to ascertain their effects on the health and well-being of workers
  • Knowledge, based on experience and on the use of quantitative measurement techniques, for evaluating the magnitude of environmental stresses and their effects on health, well- being, and efficiency
  • Knowledge required to suggest possible approaches to eliminate or reduce such stresses
  • Experience assessing and mitigating hazards to maintain compliance with the BMBL, OSHA standards, and applicable regulations
  • Experience with developing, implementing, and reviewing laboratory policies and procedures regarding biosafety principles and practices
  • Experience with developing and providing training for biosafety programs including emergency response procedures, biological safety, select agents, and biological safety cabinets
  • Excellent communication skills


  • MS, MSPH, or PhD, with 2 years of experience related to the requirements of the position
  • Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene
  • Experience making decisions on imminent danger situations, and the analysis of procedures used to eliminate, reduce, or abate occupational health dangers. 
  • Experience leading inspections involving several occupational health and safety specialists
  • Previous experience working in a similar role

Language Skills:

  • The candidate must possess excellent oral and written communication skills in English   


  • Must be United States citizen or permanent resident or have authorization for employment in the United States
