Purpose: The Opioid Mortality Data Analyst will provide analytic support to the Michigan Opioid-involved Morbidity and Mortality Surveillance System (MOMMSS), working with data on unintentional and undetermined manner drug-related deaths. This position will follow data management and analytic protocols; conduct analyses and develop dissemination tables and materials at the direction of the supervisor, the Director of the Michigan Violent Death Reporting System (MiVDRS), and the Opioid Surveillance Coordinator. This person will be housed in the MDHHS Bureau of Epidemiology and Population Health in Lansing and work with a dataset acquired through the Michigan Violent Death Reporting System.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Work with MiVDRS Program Director and Epidemiologist to acquire and maintain an up-to-date database of drug-related deaths, following all security and confidentiality protocols of that data system • Document and follow data collection, management, and analytic protocols in support of MOMMSS systems • Conduct analyses and develop dissemination tables and materials at the direction of the supervisor, the Director of the Michigan Violent Death Reporting System, and Opioid Surveillance Coordinator • Assure that the MOMMSS Dissemination Log is kept up to date in regard to the mortality data and dissemination products • Attend drug poisoning data-related meetings as discussed with supervisor and Opioid Surveillance Coordinator • Aid in grant reporting and application development • Participate in state and federal meetings related to drug poisoning surveillance • Conduct other duties as required
Education: Possession of a Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in statistical or analytic area. Preference given to those possessing a Master’s degree in Public Health and coursework in epidemiology.
Experience: A minimum of one to three years of experience in data cleaning, management, and analysis. Experience with analytical and graphical software, preferably SAS.
Important Skills and Characteristics: Substantial data management experience, analytic and data presentation skills, and ability to manage detailed tasks.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements: Standard office environment. Involves viewing a CRT or VDT screen 25% to 75% of the time.

IMPACT ON PROJECTS, SERVICES AND OPERATIONS: The Opioid Mortality Data Analyst has direct inpact on MOMMSS through data management, analytic support, report development, as well as documentation of specifications and procedures. MOMMSS purpose is to provide key stakeholders, policy makers, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), researchers such as the University of Michigan Injury Prevention Center, local programs, and other interested parties with timely, and comprehensive data on mortality due to opioids and other drugs. MOMMSS data and findings will be provided in a way that will help partners reshape state and community level programming and interventions, and evaluate the impact of state, local and organizational policy changes on overdoses due to opioids and other drugs.
