Position Description: The curriculum: The completion of a PhD degree typically entails 4 years of focused research resulting in a thesis. The thesis requires 4 original scientific papers published in international, peer-reviewed journals and a synthesis of the research findings. After successful defense of the thesis, a doctoral degree in injury epidemiology, or related public health discipline, is awarded. Accepted candidates have choice in selecting courses (60 ECTS) and the overall study program is tailored to meet the learning and professional goals of the candidate. Accepted candidates will have the option of carrying out their PhD research in Finland or abroad.

Qualifications: Prerequisites and selection criteria: A master’s degree in a relevant field, including epidemiology, public health or biostatistics from an accredited university. Basic knowledge of epidemiology and proof of proficiency in English are required. Candidates are selected primarily on the basis of their research experience and scientific writing ability. Strong applicants will already be involved in a research project which has material that can be used for a PhD thesis, or have an available dataset and a feasible research plan.

Organization Description: Background: A new research group in injury epidemiology at the University of Turku in Finland, seeks an enthusiastic and organized PhD student who is interested in developing scientific projects. The Injury Epidemiology and Prevention (IEP) Research Group is an international multi-disciplinary research team committed to developing public health solutions for injury control. The sub-fields of interest include: traumatic brain injury (esp. pediatric TBI), falls, burns, poisoning, suicide, gender-based violence, traffic injury, workplace injuries, craniomaxillofacial trauma, drowning, bullying, elder abuse and self-harm.
