Position Description: This position involves work based in Managua, Nicaragua, to manage the scientific research portfolio in conjunction with Drs. Harris, Dr Coloma and Gordon. Affiliation with UC Berkeley as a postdoctoral fellow as part of Dr. Harris’ research program is also an option.

Position responsibilities: • Coordinate dengue, chikungunya, Zika and influenza studies in Managua, Nicaragua. • Work closely with local researchers and US-based PIs to ensure study aims are being met. • Contribute to and lead the analysis and development of manuscripts, abstracts and posters. • Initiate writing reports to funders; help with the preparation of new grant proposals. • Represent the studies at scientific conferences and meetings/workshops of funding agencies. • Ensure high-quality scientific data and compliance with study protocols. • Provide programmatic support to investigators and study coordinators. • Oversee study SOPs and human subject protocols. • Act as the representative and political liaison of SSI in Nicaragua; interact with national health authorities, representatives of PAHO, international organizations and funders. • Organize yearly scientific conference in coordination with Ministry of Health

Qualifications: • Masters, PhD or Doctoral degree in public health, biology, epidemiology or related field preferred; Understanding of basic epidemiologic and biological principles. • Fully bilingual English/Spanish (reading, writing, speaking). • Experience with research projects and work with multi-cultural international teams. • Experience living abroad, particularly in developing countries. • Excellent verbal and written communications skills in both English and Spanish. • Excellent organizational and planning skills; ability to multitask. • Ability to work individually and with a team in both collaborative and leadership roles. • Basic proficiency in data management (e.g., Access) and statistical software (STATA, SAS or EpiInfo) or the willingness to learn statistical analysis programs. • Facility with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint. • Ability to be based full-time in Managua, Nicaragua; Occasional night and weekend work schedules; Occasional international travel for training and meetings.

Organization Description: In Nicaragua, a large collaboration between the University of California, Berkeley (Dr. Eva Harris), the University of Michigan (Dr. Aubree Gordon), the Sustainable Sciences Institute (a nonprofit organization whose mission is to improve scientific capacity of investigators in developing countries to solve local public health and infectious disease problems, Dr. Josefina Coloma) and the Nicaraguan Ministry of Health has been ongoing for over 20 years. Joint projects include numerous long-term studies on dengue, Zika, chikungunya, and influenza in Managua, as well as projects on health informatics and chronic diseases.
