Purpose: This entry level epidemiology position supports both the Communicable Disease Division, and the Division of HIV and STD Programs at the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. The selected candidate works with the Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) Epidemiologists to maintain quality reporting of sexually transmitted infection data, including timely processing and routing of investigations in the Michigan Disease Surveillance System. The position is based in Lansing but will include occasional travel to other locations to assist STD staff in accomplishing their duties.
Duties and Responsibilities: • Review and expedite semi-automated merging of new laboratory results with existing cases and investigations in MDSS. • Conduct initial QA review of new syphilis investigations in MDSS and assign to field staff for timely evaluation of treatment and partner services. • Assist with entry of paper lab reports to MDSS. • Identify and correct duplicate case reporting of STDs in MDSS. • Contact reporting laboratories for missing lab tests, incorrect results, incomplete information and other information as needed. • Assist in matching HIV and STD data to improve reporting completeness and coinfection analyses. • Participate in HIV – STD section staff meetings. • Assist STD program with data requests. • Maintain proficiency with Section, CDC, and HIPAA confidentiality and security guidelines and training. • Other duties are assigned by manager.
Education: Required: Possession of a Bachelor’s degree. Background in Health, Sciences, or information technology preferred.
Experience: Basic computer skills, e.g. word processing, MS excel
Important Skills and Characteristics: Detail oriented with excellent oral and written communications. Able to work well in team situations. Must be self-motivated, able to complete work in a timely manner, and handle multiple tasks with minimal supervision. Critical thinking skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (especially Excel), email, and internet browser software are required. Ability to modify SAS code as directed.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements: Job may require moderate physical effort including lifting materials and equipment of <25# and involves viewing a CRT or VDT screen 70% to 90% of the time and responding to data requests helpdesk inquires. Requires valid vehicle operator’s license where needed to perform duties of the position. Frequent deadlines. In-state and out-of- state travel for related meetings.
