Position Description: The CDC Foundation seeks candidates for a full time Enhanced State Opioid Overdose Surveillance Epidemiologist to support the CDC. As an Enhanced State Opioid Overdose Surveillance (ESOOS) Epidemiologist, you’ll support Washington State Department of Health’s mission to protect and improve the health of people in Washington State by preventing drug overdoses. You’ll also develop databases, maintain datasets, and use statistical methods to analyze data focused on fatal and nonfatal prescription drug and opioid overdoses. In addition, you’ll be coordinating with internal DOH project staff, other grant partners, data suppliers, local community partners and the CDC to reach project goals. RESPONSIBILITIES • Analyzing and interpreting qualitative and quantitative data on prescription drug and opioid overdose and related consequences, and prevention program activities. • Using statistical methods to manipulate and analyze data to create point estimates and generate tabulated results and graphs. • Using statistical software (e.g. “R”, STATA or SAS) and GIS software (e.g. arc GIS) for analyses of public health data such as vital statistics (births and deaths), hospitalizations (CHARS), and other state and national datasets. • Preparing data visualization tools. • Developing and implementing data dissemination plan; disseminate public health surveillance data. • Preparing and presenting interpretation of statistical findings for a broad range of audiences. • Assisting with epidemiology and evaluation sections of CDC grant annual reports and applications.

Qualifications: • Master’s degree or higher in epidemiology or a master’s degree or higher in public health or related field which includes 12 graduate hours in epidemiology and 12 graduate hours in biostatistics. • Three or more years of experience and knowledge in the following: o Manipulation and statistical analysis of multiple public health datasets for evaluation of health care outcomes and health system performance such as death data, hospital discharge datasets, toxicology datasets, injury surveillance datasets, EMS datasets, Prescription Drug Monitoring datasets. o Managing and analyzing health and healthcare systems data and evaluating program effectiveness and developing relevant metrics. o Effective data visualization and relevant and appropriate data dissemination. • Knowledge and use of R (most of the surveillance tools are built with R), Python, SAS or other statistical software applications/programming languages for data. • Demonstrated skill and aptitude in data science • Demonstrated experience working with healthcare systems data with overlapping objectives for evaluation, public health epidemiology and clinical quality improvement.
