Position Description: The Statistical Research Specialist (SRS) will work under general supervision in the Tennessee Cancer Registry (TCR) program, Division of Population Health Assessment, Tennessee Department of Health. The SRS is responsible for professional statistical analytic and surveillance work of considerable difficulty and performs related work as needed, e.g. development, design, and/or completion of reports, fact sheets, etc. Candidates for this position should have a basic understanding of epidemiologic principles including a basic understanding of descriptive, inferential and predictive statistics. The candidate should demonstrate ability for self-learning, good time management and collaboration with other statistical and epidemiologic staff. Candidates should demonstrate an ability to work with computers and complex software packages, good customer service skills, good written/oral/listening communication skills, good problem solving skills and attention to detail. A basic understanding of cancer epidemiology is desirable, but not required. Job responsibilities include: Use statistical software—especially Statistical Analysis Systems (SAS) and SEER*Stat software and other software packages—to compile, analyze and summarize surveillance data; conduct cancer cluster investigations; produce surveillance reports, factsheets, and infographics to summarize data for reporting purposes; assist the TCR Director with more complex epidemiologic investigations; perform complex data linkages to ensure adequate data quality; demonstrate good customer service to researchers and others requesting cancer registry data; and demonstrate attention to detail.

Qualifications: Education and Experience: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master's degree in statistics, applied statistics, social or behavioral sciences, health sciences, business, business administration, or public policy and experience equivalent to two years full-time professional work developing research methodology (e.g. performing scientific research, completing thesis/dissertation research) and/or directing statistical research. Additional graduate education may be substituted for experience. Graduate course work credit received from an accredited college or university in the above disciplines may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis to a maximum of two years (e.g., 36 graduate quarter hours in one of a combination of the above listed fields may substitute for one year of the required experience). Experience may be substituted for graduate education. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in statistics, applied statistics, social or behavioral sciences, health sciences, business, business administration, or public policy and experience equivalent to five years full-time professional work developing research methodology and/or directing statistical research. Desired qualifications: Master’s degree in an applied statistical field, such as biostatistics, OR Master’s degree in public health with a concentration in epidemiology is desired. Experience performing complex data analyses using statistical software, preferably SAS. The candidate should possess strong oral and written communication skills. Some travel may be required.
