Position Description: Job Summary Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation (PIRE) is looking for a new Corporate Executive Officer (CEO) to help lead and shape its future. In existence for over four decades, PIRE is a non-profit public health research organization with 43 Ph.D./M.D. scientists and over 100 staff members located in six centers across the United States. PIRE scientists examine risk and protective factors at individual and population levels germane to a variety of public health issues. PIRE is seeking applicants who have proven leadership and relevant executive management experience and skills.

The new CEO must be comfortable in an established corporate culture that emphasizes shared governance—collaborative, not “top-down,” communication and decision- making. The CEO works collaboratively on a regular basis with Center Directors to facilitate the work of senior-level scientists and staff. The CEO also works intensively with the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) on fiscal matters to ensure optimal stewardship of PIRE’s resources. The CEO is responsible for operational, financial, administrative, and legal activities of the Institute. This includes strategic pursuit of new funding, public relations, and marketing.

The CEO is charged with the implementation of PIRE’s mission, vision, and values. He or she is guided by PIRE’s “Principles and Standards of Internal Governance,” which states: “PIRE is committed to transparency in decision-making, encouraging communication, and soliciting input from staff regarding important policies and decisions.”

About PIRE PIRE has a diverse portfolio of grants and contracts. These externally funded projects are led by scientists and program staff from a variety of academic backgrounds (e.g., anthropology, epidemiology, economics, psychology, public health, sociology, and statistics).

For over four decades, PIRE has been home to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) Prevention Research Center in Berkeley, CA.

Evaluation, technical, and training projects are a critical component of PIRE’s portfolio.

PIRE is led by an active Board of Directors consisting of 7 external and 4 internal staff directors. The Board is responsible for the recruitment and hiring of the next CEO.

Building on an impressive history of accomplishments, the CEO will have an opportunity to articulate and implement a vision for the future of PIRE and, working with distinguished PIRE scientists and the Board, to lead the organization into the future.
