Position Description: A person in this position conducts technical work in the field of public health epidemiology, conducting applied studies of public health conditions and providing quantitative input for program implementation and evaluation. The employee will develop projects and reports using disease reports, birth and death certificates, cancer registries, hospitalization discharge data, and emergency department visit data. The employee will work both independently and with the Medical Epidemiologist or an Epidemiology Research Associate Supervisor to design questionnaires, compile and analyze data, make disease control recommendations, and create reports based on results. Reporting may require the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The epidemiologist’s work supports the overall program in the department by determining causal factors for public health conditions, evaluating and making recommendations for assessment systems; and evaluating operations and practices. Work involves investigating disease outbreaks, data collection and analysis and the publication and/or presentation of study results and conclusions to various audiences. Work also includes interpreting relevant rules, regulations, and policies involved in the investigation and control of public health conditions.

Qualifications: A master’s degree or equivalent in epidemiology or biostatistics; Or A master’s degree or equivalent in public health, nursing or biomedical sciences with graduate level course equivalent to 9 semester credits epidemiology and 6 credits biostatistics and experience at least equivalent to an internship (at least 200 hours) in applied epidemiology with a public health organization; Or A master’s degree in nursing or biomedical sciences and at least one year of experience in conducting public health epidemiology projects and/or investigations.
