Purpose: The Asthma Surveillance & Epi Epidemiology Graduate Summer Intern will ass assist Michigan Department of Health and Hum Human Services (MDHHS) Asthma Prevention and Con Control Program staff in conducting asthma sur surveillance to guide, support and evaluate Mic Michigan asthma programs and policies. This per person will work on site at MDHHS, with ove oversight and supervision provided by MDHHS man managers. The internship is for 16 weeks at 29 29 hours per week, for a maximum of 520 hou hours.

Duties and Responsibilities: • Conduct and update surveillance a analyses of yearly asthma hospitalization a and mortality data. • Develop, conduct and update asthma surveillance analyses of other datasets, including national population-based survey d data on health behaviors of adults and c children. • Prepare and publish reports of a asthma surveillance analyses in the form of f fact sheets, local and statewide s surveillance reports and updates to website s statistics. • Participate in the design and i implementation of program evaluation a activities. • Provide data support to local asthma c coalitions and program advisory committees, a as appropriate. • The Intern will be introduced to the duti duties and responsibilities of chronic dise disease epidemiologists in the Section.


Education: Possession of a Bachelor’s degr degree and concurrent enrollment in a Master of P of Public Health or equivalent program.

Experience: Course work in epidemiology and bi biostatistics is preferred but not required. Ex Experience with a statistical software pa package, such as SAS and SPSS, is preferred bu but not required.

Important Skills and Characteristics: Excellent oral and written communications skills. Able to work well in team situations. Self-motivated and able to co complete work in timely manner with minimal su supervision. Proficiency in Microsoft Office ap applications and familiarity with em email/internet.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements: Job may require moderate physical effort including lifting materials and equipment of less than 50 pounds and will involve viewing a CRT or VDT screen 25 to 75 percent of the time. Standard office environment. May require valid vehicle operator’s license where where needed to perform duties of the posit position.
