Position Description: The Research Scientist 3 (RS3) level position serves as the Metropolitan Area Regional Office (MARO) region subject matter expert and is critical to oversee and coordinate response activities that include disease surveillance, research, control and prevention of Legionellosis. The Epidemiologist will serve as the lead for surveillance and prevention of community-based Legionnaires’ disease in the Metropolitan area. Due to New York State’s burden of Legionnaires’ disease (nearly 500 legionella cases per year), this position is essential to disease (nearly 500 legionella cases per year), this position is essential to providing epidemiologic epidemiologic consultation and technical guidance in the reporting, investigation, diagnosis, prevention, and control of Legionnaires’ disease to a range of health care professionals including physicians and nurses, local health department staff, and state agency representatives. In support of the statewide emergency regulations enacted 8/17/15 to combat Legionnaires disease, the incumbent will develop protocols to address clinical surveillance, investigation and response activities including maps of cases and potential sources. Activities are essential to enhance timeliness and accuracy of Legionnaires’ disease investigations, response and control to protect the health and safety of New York State residents. This position may have supervisory responsibilities.

In addition to the duties described above, the Research Scientist 4 (RS4) will have increased responsibility and independence, including major responsibilities for all aspects of research projects. The incumbent will interact more closely with higher level staff in DOH and external stakeholders, and may have supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Research Scientist 3 (RS3): Bachelor’s degree in epidemiology, public health, biology, life sciences, statistics, biostatistics, social/behavioral sciences, or a related field and four years of professional post-degree research experience in that field; or, a Master’s degree in one of the above fields and three years of such experience; or a Doctorate in one of the above fields and one year of such experience.

Research Scientist 4 (RS4): Same as listed fo for RS3 plus an additional one year of experience at each academ

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: In addition to the above requirements, the ideal candidate will have: A minimum of four years of experience in communicable disease related activities or quality improvement/performance management. Excellent organizational and written and oral communication skills, which includes both public speaking and preparation of written materials such as reports, abstracts, and publications. Familiarity with surveillance and outbreak response activities and/or infection control experience. Lead or co-author of scientific publications. Experience supervising professional level staff. Advanced knowledge of SAS, and experience using computer-based software packages, such as Epi Info, GIS, Microsoft Access, Word, Excel, etc. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively work as part of a team and interact with individuals across all levels of an o organization. organization.
