Position Description: The CDC Foundation seeks candidates for a full-time PhD Research Scientist position for research and provides laboratory support that improves the detection, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of selected chronic diseases. The PhD Research Scientist will be hired by the CDC Foundation and assigned to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Chamblee campus in Atlanta, Georgia at the National Center for Environmental Health within the Division of Laboratory Sciences (DLS). This position works 40 hours a week.

Within DLS, the Protein Biomarker Laboratory in the Clinical Chemistry Branch supports this through performing research on biomarkers to detect human exposure and to diagnose, treat and prevent chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases (CVD). The PhD Research Scientist in the Clinical Chemistry Branch will provide support for capacity building and external quality assessment (EQA) activities in low and medium income countries to eliminate industrial produced trans-fatty acids, which are linked to increased risk for CVD.

•Assist with the development, implementation and operation of an external quality assessment scheme for measuring trans fatty acids in human samples. •Analyze human specimens for trans fatty acids using complex analytical instrumentations such as gas chromatography, mass spectrometry, and automated liquid handling instruments •Process and evaluate laboratory data using complex software and data evaluation procedures •Perform tasks in compliance with policies and regulations such as those outlined in the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment (CLIA) •Develop written documentation that clearly and accurately documents laboratory procedures, instrument operation, experimental results, troubleshooting and remedial actions •Provide technical assistance and consultation to international laboratories setting up laboratories to perform trans- fatty acid analysis in human specimens

Qualifications: QUALIFICATIONS

•A Doctorate degree or equivalent (preferably in Analytical Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a related field) •Ability to conceive, organize and carry out applied research directed towards expanding scientific knowledge and understanding of measuring biomarkers in human specimens. •Aptitude to review scientific literature, formulate research plans, conduct laboratory experiments, interpret and evaluate results and other findings, and write reports describing the results and conclusions. •Ability to develop, optimize, and troubleshoot methods. •Ability to mentor others on technical operating systems, data processing, and data analysis. •Experience with HPLC, GC, and MS instrumentation is required. •Excellent interpersonal skills to communicate and interact with laboratory staff and key collaborators regarding program activities.
