Position Description: The Public Health Institute (PHI) is seeking a Research Associate II to perform a variety of research and data related tasks for its Tracking California program.

This Research Associate will play a key role in our Sickle Cell Data Collection Program (SCDC), a public health surveillance effort to understand the health outcomes, health disparities, and health care utilization in California’s 7,000 persons living with sickle cell disease. As a part of this program, the research associate will work on coordinating data collection from clinical sites, data management, and quality control. The RA II will also contribute to environmental health projects in the Tracking California program, including the California Environmental Health Tracking Program, various air monitoring and water quality monitoring programs. For all of these programs, the RA will use SAS and/or R to clean and standardize data and perform analyses as needed.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities •Prepare large data sets for linkage and analysis •Performs analyses of health data •Drafts data documentation •Standardizes data tables •Conducts searches in vital records data to identify specific cases •Conducts literature searches •Contributes to and collaborates on publications and presentations

Additional Responsibilities •Researches, collects, and catalogs spatial datasets for a variety of projects •Conducts mid-level geospatial analyses and other miscellaneous GIS mapping duties •Development and/or updating of basic websites or working with external consultants to achieve these tasks •Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications •Bachelor’s degree in a related field required. •2 years of relevant work experience, including: •Experience with data collection, management and analysis •SAS and Excel advanced beginner or intermediate skills •Cleaning, merging, and formatting large datasets such as vital records, census, Medicaid, and hospital discharge data •Summarizing/aggregating data •Ability to work with minimal supervision •Understanding of public health methods, practices and terminology

Desired Qualifications •MPH/Master’s degree or work towards a Master’s degree •Experience and/or interest in health disparities and/or rare disease research •Experience and/or interest in environmental health •Experience with R and/or SQL •Familiarity and experience with GIS and other data analysis programs, including some combination of Arc GIS, QGIS •Experience with Tableau or other data visualization programs
