Position Description: Background:

The 2014 Global Nutrition Report called for a “data revolution for nutrition.” However there has been relatively slow progress towards filling data gaps and developing robust measurement methods for effective monitoring and evaluation of nutrition policies and programs. This research faculty position will support DataDENT: Data for Decisions to Expand Nutrition Transformation, an initiative funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation that aims to strengthen the “data value chain” for nutrition at global level and in several focus countries and regions in Africa and Asia. DataDENT partner institutions include the International Food Policy Research Institute and Results for Development.

The position will be based in Baltimore, MD, USA at the JHSPH Program for Human Nutrition (PHN) and the candidate will be an active member of the Institute for International Programs (IIP), a network of scientists in the JHSPH Department of International Health. IIP aims to improve the quality of information available to support public health policies and decision making in maternal and child health and nutrition with a focus on low-income countries. Roles and Responsibilities: This faculty member will contribute a diverse set of activities related to the DataDENT initiative including design and implementation of new mixed methods measurement-related field studies, providing technical assistance to country partners, secondary analysis of existing data, preparing research and policy briefs, technical reports and peer-reviewed manuscripts. S/he will play a leadership role, under mentorship of the PI, in country-level research, technical assistance and partner engagement in West Africa (Nigeria and Burkina Faso) S/he is expected to be knowledgeable of nutrition measurement and evaluation issues, fluent in French and have field research experience in low and middle income country settings.

The faculty member may contribute to teaching within PHN and IIP courses and seminars as well as advising of practicum and masters-level students.

Qualifications: Required Skills and Experience:

• Doctoral level degree in the field of public health nutrition, epidemiology, program evaluation, or related field. • Technical background and experience in large-scale measurement and information systems design which may include development of monitoring & evaluation systems, design and implementation of large-scale household or facility surveys, or related qualitative research. • Professional experience in low- and middle-income countries. • Demonstrate the ability to oversee design & implementation of mixed methods field studies and secondary analysis of large data sets. • Publication record in peer-reviewed journals. • Availability to travel 25-30% • Eligible candidates should have excellent organizational and time management skills. Ability to work effectively as a member of a team. • The position requires excellent oral and written communication skills in English and French.
