Position Description: This position is in the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) and reports to the PDMP Epidemiologist Supervisor. The Epidemiology Research Associate (ERA) is responsible for providing analytical and epidemiologic services, supporting the organization’s mission of protecting the public health through its responsibility for reviewing and enhancing surveillance systems used by the PDMP, improving usage and dissemination of surveillance data, developing statistical analysis, studies and reports on prescription drug overuse, misuse, abuse and overdoses to evaluate the effectiveness of the program, and support informed decisions on policy and program activities. The Epidemiology Research Associate analyzes a variety of data sources and may design a survey or study to achieve these goals. Analyses and reports are reviewed by the supervising Epidemiologist.

Qualifications: MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Eighteen (18 (18) months of professional experience performing ep epidemiologic investigations or studies, or designing and managing a disease s surveillance system and a master’s degree in epidemiology or public healt health;

or

An equivalent combination of experience and t training which includes a master’s degree in epidemiology or public h health.

Organization Description: This ERA will analyze a variety of data sources such as PDMP d sources such as PDMP data, Pennsylvania vital records (deaths) vital records (deaths), the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Conta Health Care Cost Containment Council (PHC4) data, and possibly oth data, and possibly others.

Creates reports to help program officials make informed decisi make informed decisions. Provides epidemiologic suppor epidemiologic support focusing on surveillance of drug surveillance of drug overdoses.

Assists the PDMP Epidemiologist Supervisor in the development in the development of needs assessment strategies and eva strategies and evaluation criteria for new intervention progr intervention programs for the PDMP. This work includes iden work includes identifying critical components of the components of the program, developing hypotheses that ca hypotheses that can be tested, designing the evaluation or need evaluation or needs assessment, developing data collection st data collection strategies, determining effective statisti effective statistical techniques, performing data analyses, and data analyses, and reporting findings to senior management senior management and program managers.

The ERA will heavily rely on the SAS programming lang programming language and possibly other languages such a languages such as R or Python to achieve goals.

Produces and maintains documentation for all outp output. Participates in special projects assi assigned by the PDMP Office.

Collaborates with internal and external st stakeholders on data sharing initiatives.

Prepares articles for lay publications and peer-reviewed journals, and scientific presentations and educational materials for a variety of audiences, to maintain and increase the public health epidemiology evidence base and to provide the public health community with information on Pennsylvania’s epidemiologic activities and result results.

Assists with transmission of surveillance data data to CDC. Responds to data requests from othe other entities, complying with Department data data release guidelines so that data are shar shared in an accurate and ethical manner.

Participates in statewide, interstate and/or na national surveillance and epidemiological ac activities as directed by his/her su supervisor, in collaboration with other pa partners.

Produces grant-required metrics and progress r reports as needed. Participates in grant w writing as requested.
