Position Description: The Arkansas Department of Health is looking for a highly qualified candidate to be the State Epidemiologist and Chief Medical Officer. This position reports directly to the Secretary of Health, who leads the Health Department. This position will also have voluntary faculty positions at both the College of Public Health and College of Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), which is adjacent to the Department.

Main Responsibilities of this position are: •Lead the Outbreak Response Team •Provide mentorship and oversight to epidemiologists and EIS Officers within the Epidemiology Branch (administrative responsibilities are handled by the Epidemiology Branch Chief) together with doctoral level epidemiologists, Deputy State Epidemiologist, Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Chief Science Officer and Deputy Chief Science Officer •Serve as the primary spokesperson for the Department during emerging infectious disease and environmental threats, in coordination with the Secretary of Health, State Surgeon General, Deputy Chief Medical Officer, and the Office of Health Communications •Work proactively to mitigate infectious disease threats in coordination with the Medical Director for Infectious Diseases and the Medical Director for Immunizations •Work together with the Branch Chief and Medical Director for Preparedness and Response to update and exercise infectious disease and environmental health disaster plans •Provide leadership to Department medical directors and County Health Officers (volunteer physicians) together with the Deputy Chief Medical Officer •Help to maintain strong academic partnerships at the UAMS College of Public Health and College of Medicine •Help to maintain strong relationships with the State Medical Board, State Medical Society, and other medical professional groups in the state (e.g., AAP, ACP, AAFM) •Help to provide strategic direction to the Department together with Chief of Staff, Deputy Director for Public Health Programs, and Chief Science Office and reporting to the Secretary of Health •Promote scholarly activities within the department in cooperation with the Chief Science Officer

Qualifications: Requirements The formal education equivalent of medical degree approved by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association and successful completion of the internship or residency postgraduate requirements; plus nine years of progressively more responsible experience in the medical field, including five years in a professional managerial capacity. Must be licensed as a Physician by the State Medical Board in accordance with ACA 17-95-401 and 403 (requirement can be met after hire).

Preferred Qualifications Experience in working in the public health field at the government level. Experience working with the media, community groups, and professional organizations MPH, MS in Epidemiology, and/or PhD in Epidemiology
