Position Description: Research Specialist V performs highly advanced (senior-level) research work by designing and conducting research projects for the Healthy Texas Mothers and Babies (HTMB) Epidemiology Team in the Maternal and Child Health Epidemiology (MCH Epi) Unit in the Division for Community Health Improvement (CHI). Reports to the Surveillance and Data Analytics Manager with minimal supervision and with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Plays a major role in supporting the Texas Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Review Committee (Review Committee) by conducting statistical analysis using various data sources and clinical information for validation, thereby producing the most accurate results. Performs scientific literature searches and reviews research proposals to support ongoing investigations/projects. Consults with research professionals, including the Technical Team Lead, administrators, and statistical staff to define and solve specific problems and to assure quality control across experimental methods, research design, and statistical analysis. Prepares research articles for scientific publication, as well as papers, reports, and presentations for in-house distribution and to support program management and other DSHS activities. Represents MCH Epi and CHI on committees, regional workgroups, and projects to meet research and data analysis needs. Represents the state at the national level on research and data analysis issues.

Qualifications: Graduation from an accredited college or university with receipt of a Master’s degree in epidemiology, public health, statistics, social science or a related field.

Experience conducting independent research.

Experience analyzing large databases using SAS or other statistical software used to conduct advanced statistical analyses.
