A research opportunity is currently available with the Office of Policy and Partnerships, within the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC), at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
Injuries and violence affect everyone. More than 243,000 people die from violence and injuries each year. In the first half of life, more Americans die from violence and injuries than from any other cause, including cancer, HIV, or the flu. In addition, millions of people are injured each year and survive. Many face life-long mental, physical, and financial problems resulting from their injuries. For more than 25 years, CDC’s Injury Center has helped protect Americans from injuries and violence. We research injuries and violence to find the best ways to prevent them, applying science and creating real-world solutions to keep people safe, healthy, and productive. The Center’s priorities include: Adverse Childhood Experiences, Overdose, and Suicide.
The Health Policy Team sits within the Office of Policy and Partnerships in the Office of the Director of CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control. Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will receive training on: •Approaches to tracking state legislative interest and action related to NCIPC priorities •Contributing to the development of public health briefing and meeting materials •Analyzing public health legislation, regulations, executive directives, and departmental policy issuances •Participating in the development of new initiatives that contribute to improvements in public health •Contributing to the development of internal and external reports and other administrative level documents •Monitoring program performance through various internal and external performance reporting channels
The participant may also train in cross- cutting policy activities, such as partnership development, congressional relations, and issues management to enable the participant to develop skills in the breadth of policy functions at CDC that will well position the participant for a variety of potential future opportunities.
Anticipated Appointment Start Date: September 14, 2020
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment- related benefits.
