A research opportunity is currently available with the Research and Evaluation (R&E) team, within the Emergency Risk Communication Branch (ERCB) in the Center for Preparedness and Response (CPR) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
The mission of ERCB's Research and Evaluation Team is to provide usable scientific data and evidence to enhance the behavioral impacts of CDC’s risk communication efforts during public health emergencies. The current training opportunity is in support of the COVID-19 response. Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will have the opportunity to contribute to a project focused on public health opinion surveys on a variety of topics pertinent to supporting the response. Other activities may include: •Communication surveillance: Collaborating with CDC communication researchers to analyze public health emergency-related news media stories, social media posts, and other user-generated content to provide daily input to inform agency communication strategy during CDC emergency responses •Communication evaluation: Analyzing and reviewing communication system and audience data collected during emergency responses and exercises to assess the utility and impact of communication processes and activities, identify gaps, and recommend improvements; produce reports, presentations or manuscripts for internal and external stakeholders •Communication research: Providing research literature summaries on special topics during emergency responses; collaborating with communication researchers to support research projects including input on instruments, processes, data collections, analysis and reports •Development of products to promote the efforts of the team and branch: Collaborating with team and branch leadership to contribute to the development of written products explaining the findings and implications of research and evaluation activities to multiple audiences with varying levels of technical knowledge
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
