A research opportunity is currently available with the Division of Environmental Health Science and Practice (DEHSP) of the National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Health Studies Section within CDC’s NCEH aims to reduce the negative public health consequences of environmental health disasters and emerging hazards by responding to natural and technological disasters, investigating outbreaks with suspected environmental or toxic etiology, and conducting applied epidemiologic studies to characterize health effects of environmental health disasters and emerging hazards. The Health Studies Section also provides technical assistance and expertise to state, tribal, local, and territorial (STLT) public health agencies, by request, on disaster epidemiology, including the Community Assessment for Public Health Emergency Response (CASPER); delivers trainings on disaster epidemiology; and develops strategies to prevent or reduce disaster-related morbidity and mortality.
Under the guidance of a team of disaster epidemiologists, the selected participant will be involved in the following training opportunities: •Contribute to activities within the Disaster Epidemiology Community of Practice (DECoP) ?Learn to coordinate and manage DECoP quarterly webinars, including collaborating with staff in organizing speakers and providing technical assistance to DECoP membership ?Learn Microsoft Office SharePoint by building out and increasing the usability of the DECoP online forum SharePoint site ?Gain experience in communication by participating in the generation of communication materials for DECoP members, including bi-monthly newsletters
•Gain knowledge about how CDC builds public health capacity for preparing for, responding to, and recovering from natural and human-induced disasters and emergencies by participating in technical assistance, trainings, response, and/or exercises •Learn about data collection, entry, management, analysis, and dissemination for epidemiological assessments (e.g., CASPER) and public health surveillance •Collaborate with staff on routine, scheduled, and emergency surveillance responsibilities using poison control center data •Improve presentation and oral communication skills by presenting on their research activities at Section meetings at least once per year
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
