The U. S. Army Public Health Center (APHC) mission is to enhance Army readiness by identifying and assessing current and emerging health threats, developing and communicating public health solutions, and assuring the quality and effectiveness of the Army's Public Health Enterprise. APHC’s vision is to be a world-class provider of public health services across the Army and DOD.
Within the APHC Health Promotion and Wellness Directorate, the Public Health Assessment Division advocates, builds capacity, and provides comprehensive program evaluation services to inform evidence- driven decision making within the Army Public Health System. The Public Health Assessment Division is comprised of a multidisciplinary team of scientists, advanced public health practitioners, and program evaluators.
As an ORISE participant, you will receive hands-on experience translating evaluation and other scientific findings into actionable policy-based recommendations, assist execution of program evaluation projects of mutual interest to APHC and DCS- G9 and providing technical consultation to DCS-G9 personnel to optimize the Health of the Force through a community-driven public health approach to enhance the quality of life for Soldiers and Family Members. Under the guidance of APHC and DCS-G9 mentors, you will provide technical consultation to identify and scope evaluation projects, develop tools and resources to support data- driven decision-making; support evaluation implementation and analysis; read, interpret, and translate findings policy- focused recommendations; and communicate findings to various audiences through varied dissemination methods to include oral communication, written deliverables (e.g. reports, information papers, briefing slides) and/or data visualizations. In attendance the mentor, the participant will also attend Headquarters Department of the Army meetings that align with their role and support the needs of DCS-G9.
This experience will provide an opportunity to learn about public health prevention and evaluation approaches within the military, opportunities to apply and develop skills learned in the classroom (e.g., literature review, program evaluation, statistics, database management) within an applied setting, and experience in translating scientific findings to inspire action. In preparing you for the labor force, APHC will provide opportunities for you to develop actionable recommendations, act in a technical consultation role, and support evaluation tasks to assess program fidelity and effectiveness. The participant will collaborate with project team members to plan and implement evaluation tasks with an emphasis on data collection tool development, implementation (data collection, analysis, and interpretation), translating findings into actionable recommendations, and drafting deliverables for internal and external stakeholders.
Please note that as an ORISE participant you will be assigned to and primarily mentored by APHC but will have a duty assignment within the Deputy Chief of Staff (DCS) G-9, Soldier and Family Readiness Division, and will report to the Pentagon daily.

This appointment is a twelve month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.
Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by APHC. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
While participants will not enter into an employment relationship with DOD or any other agency, this opportunity will require a suitability investigation/background investigation. Any offer made is considered tentative pending favorable outcome of the investigation.
