Position Description: 1. Investigations/Studies. Under the guidance of an epidemiologist/toxicologist: Identifies populations currently exposed to levels of hazardous chemicals above health based guidelines where specific actions are necessary, to mitigate and/or prevent adverse health effects and develop recommendations and plans to accomplish same. As part of the public health assessment process, identifies/supports identification of specific actions and develops recommendations/plans to mitigate or prevent adverse health effects linked to National Priority List (NPL) sites and other hazardous waste sites. Supports epidemiologic research and investigation, when needed, in collaboration with partner agencies, regarding environmental hazards and concerns. 1.5. Prevention and control. Using best practices and published guidance for the situation, produce documents with recommendations to eliminate/minimize harmful environmental exposures to protect the health of communities. Leads or supports the development of collaborative relationships with community agencies and groups engaged in the planning, implementation and evaluation of recommendations made in public health assessment reports.

2. Surveillance. Identifies, reviews, and evaluates health-relevant databases and health studies to assess past and current health outcome parameters associated with populations impacted by hazardous waste sites and other harmful environmental exposures to determine if outcome parameters need to be modified. 3. Consultation. Under the guidance of an epidemiologist/toxicologist: Provides professional consultation and technical assistance to federal and state agencies, county health departments, community leaders and concerned citizens regarding public health issues arising from hazardous waste sites, harmful environmental exposures or chemical release incidents.

Qualifications: MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Eighteen (18) months of professional experience performing epidemiologic investigations or studies, or designing and managing a disease surveillance system and a master’s degree in epidemiology or public health;

or

An equivalent combination of experience and training which includes a master’s degree in epidemiology or public health. An employee in this position requires some understanding of and ability to interpret concepts such as Lifetime Health Advisory Levels (HAL), maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs), Minimum Risk Levels (MRLs), Cancer Risk Evaluation Guidelines (CREGs), health Comparison Values (CVs) no-observed- adverse-effects levels (NOAEL), lowest effects levels (NOAEL), lowest-observed-adverse adverse-effects levels (LOAEL), for environmental media and their relationships to environmental public health practice.

Organization Description: This position, in the CDC-funded ATSDR's Partnership to Promote Local Efforts to Reduce Environmental Exposure (Appletree) program in the Bureau of Epidemiology, Division of Environmental Health Epidemiology, supports the organization’s mission of protecting the public health by collecting, evaluating, and analyzing data related to environmental hazards and harmful environmental exposures in communities. This position also supports efforts related to community health education/health professional education.
