Position Description: The Case Epidemiology Support works within the HIV Surveillance unit to conduct and/or to assist staff with adult and pediatric surveillance and epidemiological responsibilities. Assists program staff with HIV/AIDS case investigations, including working with multiple confidential databases, contacting healthcare providers and health department staff within and across the state to gather HIV/AIDS case information as required by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and reviewing and updating databases with reports received from multiple sources including lab reports. Reviews and completes surveillance reporting forms, and enters data into surveillance systems in a timely manner and with accuracy and completeness. Assists staff in conducting data quality assurance activities. Conducts out-of-state record searches via telephone communication to surveillance staff in other jurisdictions, including record searches for the cluster detection and response (CDR) program. Assists staff in active surveillance activities via healthcare provider site visits to review medical charts, and via review of active surveillance line lists. Implements and provides feedback on processes for reporting and/or documenting HIV/AIDS cases, prepares surveillance reports and summaries, and contributes to surveillance data management. Adapts to special situations and competing priorities; engages in internal and cross-team collaborations; and incorporates the agency security & confidentiality procedures into daily responsibilities.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in healthcare, public health or related field and/or equivalent training and experience. Knowledge of public health practices; medical terminology; database management systems; and Microsoft Office. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to collect, analyze, and interpret data; identify statistical trends; prepare reports; provide technical assistance; implement policies and procedures; work independently and as a team member; work with data systems; maintain confidentiality while working with Protected Health Information; work 40 hours a week during regular business hours; adjust work hours, job duties, and be willing to travel as needed. Preferred requirements include an advanced degree in public health or related field; knowledge and/or experience in HIV/AIDS epidemiology, technical certifications and/or experience; experience in communicable disease surveillance; working with medical providers; and reviewing medical charts. Experience working with confidential databases, use of statistical software for analysis; knowledge and use of data quality assurance techniques; experience working with healthcare or lab data; knowledge of HIPAA regulations.
