Position Description: The Research Scientist I will work within the Birth Defects Lifespan Studies Section in the Bureau of Environmental & Occupational Epidemiology, Center for Environmental Health. The incumbent will join a team of public health professionals to work on CDC cooperative agreements. The incumbent will perform literature searches related to birth defects; collect, organize, handle, and evaluate project-related data; participate in problem definition, planning and execution of birth defects surveillance and research; and analyze data and interpret results including development of SAS programs, data cleaning, and data analysis; prepare reports, presentations, posters, tables, charts and graphs; and work with senior staff to draft manuscripts for publication in scientific journals based on analyses.

Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Environmental/Public Health, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Biology or a related field and two years of research experience; OR a Master’s degree in a related field and one year of research experience.

This position requires that the incumbent will report to the official work location and live within commuting distance to the official work location. Telecommuting may not be available. If telecommuting is available, the incumbent will be required to have a telephone/mobile device, and internet access.

Preferred Qualifications Graduate degree in a related field and one year experience conducting epidemiological research and data management/data analysis. Experience managing and analyzing large data sets. Experience with statistical analysis, preferably using SAS. Experience writing manuscripts based on analyses. Familiarity with Statewide Planning and Research Cooperative System (SPARCS) data and/or birth defects data and/or vital records data. Familiarity with using MS Access for data management.
