Position Description: Duties and Responsibilities

The Data Analyst will be expected to assist with categorizing tobacco and nicotine products by flavor and subtype and calculating descriptive statistics under the supervision of a Health Scientist. Additionally, the Data Analyst may be asked to support the other pillars of the project as-needed.

The incumbent will work closely with internal and external stakeholders to support, 1) analysis of scientifically-defensible and rapidly-available retail sales data; and 2) utilization of these data to evaluate the impact of tobacco control policies in select cities and states.

Specifically, the selected incumbent will:

Conduct research on various tobacco and nicotine related topics, including preparing literature reviews and summarizing tobacco policy changes. Assist with categorizing features of tobacco and nicotine products (e-cigarettes, cigarettes, cigars, etc.) such as categorizing flavors and subtypes of products, to prepare for analysis. Maintain a database of tobacco and nicotine product features (including product type, subtype and flavor) by UPC. Import, clean, and analyze tobacco and nicotine product retail sales data, including calculating descriptive statistics, and organizing data into tables and graphs. Be responsible for quality control (QC) checking all estimates for “Data Briefs” and sales data reports and manuscripts as necessary. Support the development of comprehensive reports that include findings from the analysis and evaluation of project activities. Collaborate with internal and external subject matter experts and project partners to develop joint analyses and publications. Support the production of statistical reports, graphs, charts, tables, and narrative material to be used in presentations for stakeholders and at national conferences and meetings. Other duties and projects as assigned. Travel up to 10 percent domestically.

Qualifications: Qualifications

Minimum of one (1) year of full-time, professional work experience with data cleaning, data management and statistical analysis. Undergraduate degree in Public Health, Public Policy, Economics, or related field. Master’s degree, and/or equivalent and relevant work experience in same or similar fields preferred. Experience, training, and demonstrated proficiency with SAS or Stata. Experience with Stata highly preferred. Prior experience in tobacco control research and/or retail sales data strongly preferred. Strong technical skills, including word processing, spreadsheet, and database management. Strong written and oral communication skills, including the preparation and presentation of reports Strong interpersonal, teamwork and collaboration skills. Self-starter with ability to be efficient and consistently deliver high-quality work under time constraints. Ability to start within 2-3 weeks of receiving an offer.
