Position Description: The Eau Claire City-County Health Department has an exciting opportunity for a Communications Specialist. This position requires both health communication knowledge and experience as well as excellent analytical, interpersonal, and organizational skills. This position will provide leadership for Health Department communication, outreach, and branding efforts. In addition, this position will play an important role in increasing the quality and consistency of communication across a wide spectrum of health topics, media sources, and audiences working with a team of Health Department colleagues with content expertise. This position will play a key role in providing leadership and direction in planning and implementing a comprehensive strategic communications plan for the Health Department.

As a Communication Specialist, your primary duties will be to: • Plan, develop, implement, and evaluate traditional and non-traditional message strategies that meet the health department’s mission and goals, consider health equity, and advance health outcomes for all. • Provide marketing and communications expertise in the development and implementation of printed and online publications, websites, presentations, and other materials. • Develop content and processes for posting on various digital media outlets, including ensuring consistency across communication channels and working within state requirements and guidelines. • Ensure communication activities are based on accepted principles, methods, and best practices. • Provide leadership to internal communication team to develop, implement, and update a comprehensive communications and brand messaging strategy. • Train and work with Health Department Communication team to ensure a strategically aligned, culturally appropriate, and consistent message that promotes the work of the department and follows established policies, protocols, and communication guidelines. • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with department staff, other units of government, community organizations, the media, and the public. • Oversees and maintains the website content, social media platforms, and other communication platforms. • Serves as the department’s primary/lead social media administrator. • Serves as primary Public Information Officer in times of public health emergency response.

This position has schedule flexibility and salary starts at $33.69/hour. We also offer an excellent benefits package consisting of health and life insurance, matched contributions into a retirement fund, paid holidays, and generous vacation and personal leave.

Qualifications: Your minimum qualifications must include: • Three years of progressively responsible professional work experience in health communications, marketing, public relations, media-related activities, or a closely related field, preferably in the public or health sector. • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, or a closely related field is preferred. • Interpersonal communication, group process, and facilitation skills, including communicating a broad amount of information to a wide variety of audiences. • Experience with engaging with a broad range of community stakeholders. • Excellent writing, proofreading, communication, and social media skills required • Attention to detail. • Experience and demonstrated ability to develop, implement, and evaluate clear and actionable workplans. • Ability to contribute to work environment where continuous quality improvements in service and professional practice are pursued. • A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation. • A passion about both public service and a work-life balance. • Willingness to engage in continuous learning and training.

Other preferred qualifications: • Candidates should understand communication theory and practices, knowledge of 508 compliance and accessibility, experience engaging a broad range of community and public health prevention partners, as well as digital media strategy and implementation • Experience in public health communication preferred. • Experience with graphic design software like Adobe suite products, Canva, or others and web design software such as WordPress or Squarespace.
