Position Description: The DON will be involved in strategic planning and be a critical part of the leadership team to manage the public health nursing services of the Health Agency. The DON will coordinate resources and communications to meet identified County and public health clinical and communicable disease service needs and assures effective and efficient programs. The DON will also be involved in providing consultation to administrators, staff, outside agencies, and the public concerning division operations and services. The DON will oversee an approximate budget of $6 million, and a staff of 45.

The Clinical and Communicable Disease Services (CCDS) Division is part of the Health Agency of the County of San Luis Obispo. The Health Agency’s mission is to provide a broad array of services essential to the health and well-being of those living in and visiting San Luis Obispo County. The Health Agency is comprised of the Behavioral Health, Public Health, and Animal Services Divisions, and the Office of the Public Guardian. The Health Agency is fortunate to have a very supportive Board of Supervisors and an engaged County Administration, which has been critical in the County’s ability to be mighty in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. CCDS programs include: Family Planning, Reproductive Health, Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Immunizations, and Communicable Disease Prevention and Control. Qualifications: Our ideal candidate will be a quick study bringing extensive experience in public health programs, and have some experience overseeing administration, employee relations, and leading and developing other nurses and support staff. The ideal candidate will demonstrate emotional intelligence, passion about the work, be involved in the community, solutions orientation, and critical thinking. The DON will lead other professionals, support staff and nurses effectively. This person will also have strong written and oral communication skills and be political savvy to effectively support executive and elected officials. The DON will work to develop and train staff, coordinate and direct personnel, resources and communication to meet identified County and public service needs as well as empower staff to take initiative and provide solutions. Direct public sector experience is a plus!
