Position Description: |
The Junior Epidemiologist works within the Virginia Department of Health’s STD Prevention and Surveillance (SPS) program to conduct a range of epidemiologic activities related to the surveillance and prevention of sexually transmitted infections (STI). The Junior Epidemiologist will assist with enhanced reporting activities, including requesting and gathering information from medical providers; participate in data management and cleaning; assist with the implementation and transition to new STI surveillance database; facilitate and monitor data sharing with outside jurisdictions; provide technical assistance to stakeholders; and monitor and review data collection and entry for accuracy. This position will also provide assistance with other duties related to STI surveillance and data entry/quality assurance activities.

Qualifications: |
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree or experience in epidemiology, public health, or a related area. Considerable knowledge of the cause, transmission, treatment, and prevention of infectious diseases and methods of public health surveillance and disease outbreak investigations. Experience with data collection, entry, and management. Experience using disease surveillance data systems. Strong oral and written communication and customer service skills, including experience communicating health-related information. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality while working with Protected Health information (PHI).
Preferred Qualifications: Experience in STI surveillance, epidemiology, or investigation. Experience interpreting syphilis or other STI laboratory results. Experience conducting data quality assurance. Experience with STD/HIV surveillance data systems (experience with NBS, eHARS, and/or Maven preferred).

This is a contract position hired and employed directly by 22nd Century Technologies, Inc. The selected candidate will not be considered a state employee and will not receive state benefits. Employment is contingent upon satisfactory results of a background investigation.

Special Requirements: This position may require occasional in-state travel. A valid Virginia driver’s license is required.
Location: This position is based at the VDH Central Office in Richmond, VA. This position will be authorized to telework for a portion of the week during the public health emergency. The selected candidate will be required to report to the Central Office in Richmond, VA at least three days per week and may be required to report to work at the Central Office up to five days per week following the public health emergency.
